Last year I began writing poetry out of a desire to encourage people going through infertility. I battled infertility alongside my wife for seven years, finally achieving success with twins. As a result, I felt compelled to share my story. My hope was to lift someone out of deep depression – to provide him or her a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately, I was met with resistance.
What guy shares an experience about a topic hardly anyone wants to discuss? So with tons of poetry on hand, I decided to turn a few them videos poems and upload them onto YouTube. It was a noble cause, yet I only knew how to write.
As with most things I don’t know, I jumped on the Internet and began researching how to make a video using my poetry, free images and royalty free music.
What Software to Use
Most of the items needed to complete my poetry video were easily found online. Perform a search for either term and a plethora of sites appear. After that it was a matter of figuring out how to put it all together.
Initially, I used PowerPoint to create my video but my efforts were futile as I learned YouTube only accepts media files – .ppt isn’t a media file. Man was I bummed out. My PowerPoint slide was perfectly timed as the slides synched with the music.
Thinking my hard work was all for not, I read a little further regarding accepted files – mp3, mp4 and wmv. The only one I knew how to create was a .wmv file and it was using Window Movie Maker. I know, it’s a dinosaur compared to other video production software but I wasn’t going to spend money on this project, at least not now.
Turning Text into Images
Even though I couldn’t upload the PowerPoint presentation in Youtube, I was able to use the slides as images. If you right click the text box in PowerPoint an option to save as a picture appear. I did just that and saved each slide as a separate image.
Put it All Together
With the entire slide show saved as individual images, I opened Windows Movie Maker and started a new project. I proceeded to insert the images saved and adjusted the transitions. It took some time getting the transitions the way I wanted them. Once the video was set, I added the free royalty music track into the timeline. View the finished product here.
