A bay window can look just as gorgeous outside as it does indoors when stylishly enhanced. It should not be hidden by overgrown shrubbery. On the contrary, it should be used as part of the outdoor decorating scheme. Add artfully arranged planters and extraordinary decor, and do not overdo it. Draw attention to the architectural style of the home with these creative methods. Use my ideas for decorating the landscape directly under a bay window, and beautifully frame your view of the outside world.
Create a Landscape Bed That Matches the Shape of the Bay Window
When amateur designers create landscape beds, many simply follow the lines of the home, sidewalks and any other permanent fixtures. Professionals often choose asymmetrical designs. The most striking beds have unexpected curves, and they can enhance the appearance of the home rather than overtake it with a rainbow of colors and massive amounts of flowers and unnecessary outdoor decor. Less is more when decorating the inside of the home, and the same often goes for landscape beds.
When decorating the landscape directly under a bay window, highlight the feature by creating a bed that coordinates with the shape of the overhanging frame. It will look phenomenal, and if it extends out several feet, it will be visible from indoors rather than just outside. After all, the beauty of your yard should be more for your benefit than the neighbors and passersby.
Display Two Beautiful Pots of Blooms and a Large Piece of Driftwood
With the less is more theory in mind, consider displaying two beautiful pots of blooms and a large piece of driftwood or a concrete statue of the appropriate size. As the photo clearly demonstrates, the color of the flowers will draw the eyes toward the area directly beneath the bay window.
I chose Wave petunias to fill a couple of painted clay pots in my yard, and I planted white sweet alyssum seeds. Wave petunias are known for their abundant blooms and foliage. They create amazing waves of color. The flowers pictured were freshly planted, but they will eventually fill the pots and cascade over the sides.
Plant Tall Flowers That Will Bloom Just Above the Windowsill
The landscape bed under a bay window is the ideal location for planting taller flowers. Choose varieties that will bloom just above the windowsill as well as lower growing varieties that will provide color that will enhance the taller foliage. Consider placing a fountain in the center of the arrangement. The tiered display with a water feature will look fantastic, and it will enhance the bay window in a very impressive way.
