Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to make DIY decorations. All I need is colorful paper, pretty ribbon, some paint, plastic cookie cutters and my trusty heart paper punch to make some colorful and inexpensive decorations. When the holiday is over, it’s easy to store the decorations for next year. Thus, the next time you are at the craft store, pick up some cute patterned scrapbook paper, ribbon, paint and you will be armed and ready to tackle these inexpensive homemade Valentine’s Day decorations.
XOXO and Heart Pipe Cleaners
To make the Xs, take one pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Then put one over the other in an X position. Twist the two pieces around twice so the pipe cleaners are locked together. For the Os, bend the pipe cleaner into an oval and then wrap the end of one piece around another. For the hearts, bend the pipe cleaner into a heart shape and wrap the two end pieces that come down together. These can be thumb tacked to the wall or hung across the doorway with ribbon.
Using a heart paper punch, make hearts out of patterned and plain paper. If you don’t have a paper punch, simply make a template and use it to cut out a dozen or so same sized-hearts. Then, attach one heart to the end of a pretty ribbon or make a chain of hearts all the way up the ribbon. Use thumb tacks to hang the ribbon in a doorway.
Make a pretty heart picture on canvas. Simply, pour several different colors of paint onto a plate and then dip a plastic cookie cutter into the paint. Next, put the cookie cutter onto the canvas. Rinse and wipe the cookie cutter clean. Then, repeat with other colors until you have your desired heart pattern. I chose to do three overlapping hearts in different colors. I took a small piece of sponge to fill in each heart with paint. Allow your canvas painting to dry before hanging it.
Photos Backed with Themed Paper
I purchased 10 acid-free scrapbooking papers out of the dollar bin at Target. These are great for using as a background or matte for photos. Simply choose a favorite photo and then cut the paper to fit into your desired frame. You can either center the photo in the middle of the paper, or cut out a rectangle or square to form a border around the picture. Finally, place the bordered picture in a frame.
These are made in a similar manner to regular snowflakes. Cut out a heart from stiff colored paper. Then, fold the hearts in half and cut out diamonds, triangles and intricate details. Open the hearts, punch a hole in the top and hang with a pretty ribbon. These look pretty hanging from the ceiling or alternate these with the hanging hearts.
These inexpensive homemade Valentine’s Day decorations will certainly make your home look festive.
