Commentary| “The Best,” is a simple yet powerful phrase that is used around the world to classify the pinnacle of achievement trumping all others. I don’t know how many times I have googled “what is the best…” I have searched for the best restaurant, best car, best computer, best antivirus software, cleats, raincoat, dog, etc. etc. etc. I’ve searched for the best of everything because that is what I want to have and that is what everyone wants, the best. Can Real Madrid be classified as the best team in the world?
As of this moment they cannot be classified as the best team in the world. Throughout the season they have struggled to find any rhythm to their game and have struggled to show what all Real Madrid fans expect of their team, a lethal and vicious attack that scares opponents, giving opponents a real sense of, “we just got dominated” So far Real Madrid have not “dominated” any opponent. The one team, that for the past couple of years, if not decade, that has truly scared and dominated opponents is F.C. Barcelona, with Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and Xavier “Xavi” Hernández leading the way. It would be very hard to say that Real Madrid is the best team in the world when F.C. Barcelona has been the better team for the past couple of years.
Real Madrid currently lacks the viciousness and pizzazz to dominate opponents and leave the world without question that they are the greatest team in the world. However I do believe that they are slowly recapturing this lethality in attack and overall play, and will shortly, perhaps in the next year or two, once again have a beautiful lethality to their game, and the title of The Best Team in the World, will be theirs for the taking.
Currently, however, they sit 13 points behind F.C. Barcelona in La Liga’s table. (www.marca.com) With 8 weeks left, representing a total of 24 possible points, F.C. Barcelona will win La Liga this year. The next step for Real Madrid is to win all 8 of the remaining La Liga games, and win convincingly, win the champions league and with the Spanish King’s Cup
Their greatest challenge and best possible moment to prove they are the greatest team in the world will come in the semifinals of the Champions League which will be played on April 23, and April 30, against either, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund. (www.uefa.com) If Madrid can play with an attacking flair, and attacking viciousness with strong defense, they can beat any team, but will need to prove it against the best of Europe.
Right now the best players for Madrid that have consistently shown their class and skill are Mesut Özil and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both of whom have shown that when they are on the field, they can dominate and control the game, instilling the type of fear in their opponents that it takes to be classified as the world’s best team. Now if they can elevate their teammates to their same level, Madrid will be a great team.
The future for Madrid looks very bright at the moment. The question of whether or not their coach will stay or go will be very interesting and if he goes their new coach will inherit a pretty good team. My feeling is that he will stay, sign the players he wants in the summer and make Real Madrid a great team next year.
Lastly I believe that if Madrid want to be great they need to get rid of a couple of players that have been dragging down the team and do not add any sense of “viciousness” to their attack, those players mainly being Álvaro Arbeloa, Fábio Coentrão, José María Callejón, and Sami Khedira. I imagine that at least one, if not all of those players will be sold during the offseason.
Is Real Madrid currently the best team in the world? No, but if they can win the Champions League by getting past F.C. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Dortmund, they definitely will be.
