It’s great to be a fan of the Detroit Tigers. As much as I love baseball, it’s reassuring to know that the team that I follow strives to do what it takes to put a consistent winner on the field every year.
With this in mind, here are 10 reasons why I’m a fan of the Detroit Tigers:
10. Comerica Park
Fans identify with their hometown ballpark more than any other sports stadium. Comerica Park, since opening in 2000, has been the beautiful home of the Detroit Tigers. I’m thankful to be able to remember old Tiger Stadium, but building the new stadium was a necessary step in bringing the Tigers into the future.
9. Owner Mike Ilitch
None of this would be the same without Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. He made his money with Little Caesars but since buying the Tigers in 1992 he has taken the Tigers to being annual contenders.
8. The announcers
As Tiger fans, we are lucky to have the announcers that we have. Ernie Harwell was legendary but Dan Dickerson and Jim Price do a great job on the radio and Mario Impemba and Rod Allen have so much fun calling the games on TV it’s impossible to not enjoy it as well.
7. Manager Jim Leyland
He gets criticized a lot, but manager Jim Leyland has been around the game for as long as he has for a reason. He knows the game, knows how to look at an entire season and seems to get a lot out of his players.
6. General Manager Dave Dombrowski
If the Tigers have a need, he always seems to find the best way to fill it. Whether through free agency or trade, general manager Dave Dombrowski continuously pushes the right buttons to get the talent they need.
5. The old English ‘D’
It seems weird to think of a letter as a reason to be a fan of the Tigers, but fans of the team, especially the ones in Detroit love identify themselves with the old English ‘D’.
4. Caring fan base
It’s nice being a fan of the Tigers and knowing that there are a ton of fans out there just like me who live and die with every Tiger win and loss.
3. The players
The Tigers have a ton of star power. Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and newly signed Torii Hunter just scratches the surface. Any player at any position has a chance to make the all star team this year which isn’t something a lot of teams can say.
2. The history
Not only are the Tigers great now, they have a long history of greatness. From winning World Series titles in 1984, 1968, 1945 and 1935 to having all time great players like Ty Cobb and Al Kaline the Tigers are deep in history.
1. The future
The future is bright for the Tigers. Though they have some money issues to contend with as they continue to pile up on big contracts, if they make the right moves they should be contenders for years to come.
These are my 10 reasons for being a fan of the Tigers. What do you love about your team?
