One thing “Pittsburghers” here in the Burgh’ take great pride in, is that we host the 2nd largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the world! I enjoyed watching last year’s parade that featured over 23,000 participants from Pittsburgh-area marching bands, politicians, and a host of Irish-heritage groups. I will be among the 200,000 people again this year who are celebrating Pittsburgh’s Irish heritage and being “Irish for the day.”
This year’s 2013 Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be celebrated on Saturday, March 16th at 10am. The route begins at the Greyhound Bus Station, proceeds onto Grant Street turning right onto the Boulevard of the Allies, past the reviewing stand at the intersection with Stanwix Street, then ends at Commonwealth Place. One thing to note is that the Pittsburgh parking authority is offering free parking at the Second Ave. Open Air parking lot just beyond the public safety building. This is a short walk to Grant St. and the Boulevard of the Allies.
During the parade, from 10 am to 1pm Market Square will host the Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Parade Fest. As part of the fun at this family-friendly Irish celebration you will see Music by Celtic Shores, McDonald Pipe & Drum Band, Irish dance performances from Shovelin Dance School, magicians, face painters, jugglers, balloon artists, and Leprechaun crafts.
During the Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, we are starting another great tradition for the city of ‘black and gold’. We will be having an official parade T-shirt! Pittsburgh has never done this before. As you can see this T-shirt will sure to be a collectible for years to come. The official parade T-shirt is available at retailers and T-shirt vendors throughout the city such as: Mike Feinberg, Yinzers, and the Black and Gold store in the Strip District, Hometown Sports at Station Square, Definitely You in Brentwood’s Towne Square, S&S Candy & Tobacco on the South Side, and the gift shop at North Side’s Allegheny General Hospital. You can also purchase the shirt online at https://store.triblive.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=JM-SPP13. A portion of the shirt’s proceeds will go to the Irish Society for Education & Charity, Inc.
My husband and I, are a newlywed couple who reside in the Pittsburgh area. We will definitely be spending our time on Saint Patrick’s Day at Market Square watching the Irish dance performances. We will be wearing the first ever Pittsburgh Saint Patrick’s Day shirts. I hope to see you there!
