When my 50th birthday came and went without receiving the typical birthday gag gift membership, I was disappointed. I’d wanted to be a member and sample AARP’s great membership benefits. Instead of signing up immediately, I unnecessarily waited a few years until my husband was also 50, then signed us both up. We’ve been so satisfied with our benefits, I’m sorry I waited! Here’s why:
The Magazine: The magazine is by far the most obvious symbols of an AARP membership. If you use none of the other benefits of AARP, you will get great value from the six issues mailed to you per year. The topics are oriented toward active baby boomers with busy lifestyles and include travel, investments, entertainment, ways to save, health and much more. All subjects are approached from a contemporary viewpoint, and are upbeat and inspiring.
AARP Partner Offers: A membership will result in a number of partner offers from services that you may be interested in. These are not junk mail, but are serious discounts on otherwise costly services such as various forms of insurance. Research the AARP offers that you get carefully, and you will find that most of these offer great value as compared to the commercial price of similar plans.
The AARP Website: The AARP website is available in both English and Spanish and features information for all as well as member services (requiring a member login) that are fantastic. One of the newer features is a downloadable AARP Member Advantages Offer Finder IPhone App. It’ll help you to multiply those AARP savings! The AARP Bulletin is also available to read online. It is published 11 times per year and has even more information on issues of interest to budding seniors.
The AARP Auto Buying Program Online: My favorite member service online is the comprehensive auto buying program which provides real purchase price information on most makes and models. After I thought I had totaled my car after hitting a deer last fall, I used the online guide to come up with some possible choices for a replacement vehicle, Luckily (or possibly unluckily) my damaged car was eventually repaired, so I’ve had to push off my next car purchase to another time. I’m now ready for my next deer hit!
AARP Local Offers: The AARP website allows you to find local savings offers for members. In my area, the UPS offers a 15 percent services discount to AARP members. If I add this benefit to other promotional pricing locally available (my UPS office offers copying services at 5 cents a page on Wednesdays), I can bring my per page copying price down even lower!
As with all memberships, you need to explore to find the member benefits which fit your lifestyle. AARP’s offerings are broad enough to provide something for everyone. If you receive (or give) a 50th birthday gag gift membership, you can be assured that the gift has a lot more value than humor. It’s a real gift of savings and information that’ll continue giving, year after year.
