‘Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis’ Shines the Spotlight on Aquaman

by fat vox

DC Comics keeps reader anticipation at a fever pitch with “Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis.” Although it stars all the members of the Super Friends, the book gives one of the team’s highly unsung heroes the limelight he deserves. Aquaman and the battle over his undersea kingdom is the center of attention in this collection of Justice League issues 13 through 17 and Aquaman 15 and 16.

A U.S. Navy missile strikes Atlantis, provoking Ocean Master to gather the forces of the undersea kingdom to attack the east coast of the United States. Aquaman leads the Justice League into battle, all the while hoping he can straighten out the deadly situation. Can he stop an impending war between the U.S. and Atlantis? What will Aquaman do to protect the city of his ancestors?

Geoff Johns once again pens a story filled with mystery, intrigue, action, and drama. Not content with just throwing battle after battle between the mythic good guys and bad guys of the DC Universe in front of us, he infuses a “who-dun-it” element into the adventure. Johns is a master at keeping the pace darting along like a speeding bullet (pun intended). You can literally feel the passion in his writing for Aquaman.

The art for “Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis” is handled by Ivan Reis, Tony S. Daniel, and Paul Pelletier. Reis and Daniel are two of the most important talents working in the comic book industry today. Reis is well known for his work on the Aquaman monthly series and Daniel carved out a niche for himself through his many years penciling and scripting both Detective Comics and Batman. Their handiwork gets a chance to really shine as they not only tackle the characters they’re known for, but all the other members of the Justice League.

Seven pages of variant covers are included in “Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis” as bonus material. The work is contributed by Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, Alex Garner, Jason Fabok, Billy Tucci, Hi-Fi, Langdon Foss, Jose Villarrubia, and Steve Skroce. Each one gets their opportunity to bring the events of the book to life through their unique styles of illustrating and coloring.

“Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis” serves as a reminder that all the members of the gang have their place and need to use their powers accordingly. Writer Geoff Johns continues to prove Aquaman deserves just as much respect as Batman, Wonder Woman, or Superman. He spares no expense in his campaign to raise awareness of how cool and powerful the King of the Sea really is.

“Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis” is available now in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions.
