Yahoo News asked Sanford, Fla., residents and others across the nation to react to the not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman case and cultural issues surrounding the trial. Here’s one response.
COMMENTARY | A jury of his peers found George Zimmerman “not guilty” on all counts, despite the tremendous pressure exerted against him by the media, Black activists and even our own President. He was found guilty by the Black community before the facts of the case were even known. Additionally, this was the first time I can remember a president taking sides in a local murder case. It was unprecedented.
The jury exhibited bravery with their careful consideration of the entire case and didn’t fall prey to voting along racial lines. They did exactly what was expected of them under the U.S. Constitution. I personally thought this might go the way of the O.J. Simpson trial under the premise of “racial payback.”
Zimmerman may have been a “wannabe cop,” as the Prosecutor termed him. He probably should not have followed Martin after the police advised against it. But, he was a neighborhood Watch Captain that felt obligated to fulfill that position.
Martin could have simply told Zimmerman what he was doing without the attitude. If he had simply given Zimmerman his address and the fact that he lived there, none of this would most likely have happened. But then things went bad in a hurry.
Zimmerman had the authority to carry a concealed weapon. I’ve got mixed feelings on that issue, but lean towards allowing it if a strong background check is involved, particularly a mental health one. Zimmerman will regret this killing for the rest of his life.
The racial issue is explosive, but is totally out of place. If Martin had been White, the publicity would have been zero, just another killing added to the hundreds that night across the country. If Martin was White and Zimmerman was Black, the Black community would have defended Zimmerman just because he was Black. And therein lies the problem with race relations in this country.
Were it not for the President sticking his nose into this event, and the race-baiter activists in the Black community, and the Liberal press, this might have been just a side-note. Why did Oakland riot, with the mantra of “No Justice, No Peace”? Do they even understand what Justice is? Based on their knee-jerk reaction to the verdict, the White community should riot, destroy vehicles, destroy storefronts and loot when a White is killed by a Black.
