They call it Kiduku. A very famous dance used by bongo flava artists in their stage performances. It started with the taarab music then it came to be populated to the young people through bongoflava music (Tanzania’s modern music which sung by youths in Swahili words).
To the children this dance is like a stage of growth, a child can’t skip it. Kiduku is performed by the children in weddings, concerts and sometimes it is like a new kind of play rather than a dance to the children. In schools at break times, students enjoy themselves by dancing in a group while each is being given a chance to show how well they can dance.
In this astonishing dance, the dancers perform it as if they are riding an imagined bicycle or motor bike; they wave their hands as if a motorcyclist is pulling fuel in his motorcycle. It is then combined by swinging legs as if a dancer is peddling a bicycle while matching with the music beats. Sometimes legs are placed on the same line, knees are brought close, then a dancer shakes his or her legs in a trembling style while jumping after several dancing moves, accompanied by squatting.
Kiduku has now come to be like an identity for Tanzania’s dancing world as it has been matched with Tanzania’s cultural music. As the dancers have their own styles of haircuts. Now a very famous hair cut style has emerged being liked the most by young people. They cut the sides of the head and leave much hair on the top of the head. Such amount could depend on the customers demand as they tailor at the barbershops and saloons. Others may go further to adding colors on their hair as some celebrities do such as football players and musicians.
Now the Kiduku dance is a great entertainment, some other parents have been enjoying their kids performing Kiduku at their homes. To other parents they do not like seeing their kids dancing Kiduku vowing that it is a waste of time. They could rather see their kids doing their home works and concentrate into their studies than seeing them dancing Kiduku.
Companies have been enjoying this dance as they use it as a tool to promote their brands, some telecoms put Kiduku dancers in the Billboards and Posters while advertising their super brands. Some other companies use road show promotion technique which entertains the use of Kiduku dancers. This attracts a lot of targeted customers depending on the products hence it eases the sales promotions.
That is Kiduku dance, while others get entertained, others earn a living.
