While enlisted in the military, I learned of ways to generate money for fundraisers, why? Because the money generated was used for birthday cakes, cards, snack funds and ad hoc items the military wouldn’t pay for.
Each of us came forward with ideas: baking cooking, washing cars, and selling ice cream outside the mess hall. Those were far from “fun” fundraisers, so one of my peers searched the Internet for other opportunities. Thanks to them, they stumbled upon a fundraising opportunity with TV show tapings called Audience Unlimited.
We were paid $10 per individual who attended. It was an awesome way to generate money. We dressed up in nice civilian clothes, drove to Burbank and sat in the audience of popular TV shows at the time.
Why do I mention fundraising and modeling in the same breath? Well, learning of Audiences Unlimited and the need for studio audiences, I began searching for other opportunities to generate income in the entertainment industry.
The military taught me a lot about myself. It also exposed me to a lot of people in Los Angeles.
As I stood in the men’s locker room, changing from a two-hour workout, I overheard someone talking about background acting and stand-in actors. I probed deeper and asked who the company was, in which they replied, “Central Casting.”
For $25, anyone can submit an application and portfolio and become part of the background actor network. No red tape. Just call the number prescribed to you to check in every morning. Submit your portfolio to the casting director, and hope to get called.
If you’re selected, you get to stand next to A-list actors and eat from the plethora of food provided at the shooting site.
TV Show Tapings
Audience Unlimited still offers fundraising opportunities for Southern California groups, but if you’re a teacher or operate a non-profit organization, free tickets to show tapings are available. As long as you have 10 or more in a group, you bypass the public route and interact directly with the group section.
Become a Model
I’m not a model, but talent scouts have approached my wife and me regarding our twins auditioning for national commercials. We attended a cattle call and learned it wasn’t the life for our children.
We opted not to pursue modeling for our twins after I read reviews about modeling. As a result my research, I ran across sites such as Bubblegum Casting, which works with first time female models, and even pays them for gigs.
