The origin of today’s society can be traced to the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s. That’s when today’s ruling gender first tasted power.
Gentlemen, it’s time to face facts. We are living in a world dominated and run by women. We’re just cute, little squirrels trying to get a nut.
But there is hope, a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a revolution taking place in our culture as we speak, one aimed at taking back what was once man’s, during the first million or so years of this planet’s existence.
And ironically this movement – as primitive as it is – has begun in a place that is associated with the origins of mankind itself, a cave. A man cave.
It’s purpose? To shield the weaker gender from the harsh realities of our female-dominated culture.
“It’s about time,” said Pat McConnell, the only Man Cave guide in Lebanon County and the unofficial leader of the male revolution locally. “It’s our chance now. It’s one more excuse to get the guys together, and ‘Hey, while you’re at it check out the products we offer’.
“It’s like a tupperwear party on steroids,” McConnell said. “I’ll go and spend a couple of hours at a place. It’s about having fun. It’s about having a good time. It’s about all my passions.”
It is important to remember that women have been hosting home parties for decades, before the concept of ‘man cave’ was even hatched. Here’s how men do it: the guide – in this case McConnell – comes to your home for what has affectionately come to be know as ‘meatings’.
At these meatings, McConnell grills non-healthy pieces of flesh, sports are viewed and/or discussed, beverages are consumed, jokes are told, games which only men could be interested in are played and McConnell’s wares are displayed. Man cave ‘meatings’ are great for football Saturdays and Sundays, bachelor parties, basketball tournaments, regular-season or post-season contests. Any time that men have reason to gather.
McConnell will even go as far as to serve as the master of ceremonies for fantasy drafts.
“There’s no cost for you to host the party,” said McConnell, a South Lebanon resident. “Ill bring $200 worth of product. We’ll play manly games. Grill up meat. Drink some (adult beverages).
“In the past when guys have typically gotten together it’s been around a football game,” continued McConnell. “They’ve gotten some (adult beverages). They’ve grilled burgers and dogs. Now we can take it to the next level. It’s something guys have done forever, and now it can be done better.”
Man cave isn’t quite as political as it is fun. But one thing’s for sure, McConnell is serious about having a good time.
“Man cave is the first and only home party for guys,” said McConnell. “Forever, ladies have been having their own home parties, Avon, Amway, Mary Kay. Football season is the perfect time for it. But it can be a spring thing too. We’re pushing monday night football, football games (tailgating), college basketball.
“And sometimes during the off-season guys are looking for things to do,” McConnell added. “I can show up at your house in the middle of a snow fall and grill some meat. Anywhere that the guys gather. You name it.”
While the fairer gender isn’t encouraged to attend meatings, they aren’t excluded or prohibited either.
“I’m passionate about it because it’s my passion,” said McConnell. “I love to grill meat. This was a perfect match for me. And I know guys who love to do it. It’s what I’d be doing on the weekends anyways.
“I think leading up to the holidays, there will be women looking for things for their husbands,” McConnell continued. “They might be interested in hosting a party. We’ll just have to tone down the testosterone.”
After considering the concept for about three years, McConnell officially became a man-cave guide in June. The venture is meant to be a side-business, a part-time pursuit.
“I really wanted to do this,” said McConnell. “I’m ready to go. I think I liked it simply because it’s unique and it’s the only game in town. I thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ I came on board in June and it’s kind of taken on a life of its own.
“I found a company that pays me to grill meat, drink (adult beverages) and play games,” continued McConnell. “There’s commission involved. They pay me for what I sell. It’s a unique way to supplement my income while I’m having a good time.”
The fact that McConnell is outgoing and has an extensive background in sales certainly doesn’t hurt his cause.
“I’ve been in sales for 20-some years,” said McConnell, who has truly been blessed with the gift of gab. “I enjoy talking to people. But I’m not pushy either. I try to sell to people the way I’d like to be sold to.”
There are always uncertainties surrounding the start-up of a new business. Sometimes making yourself vulnerable, stepping out of one’s comfort zone and taking a leap of faith are required.
“Man cave bills it as a side business,” said McConnell. “I guess if you did it 24/7 you could make a living out of it. But for me it’s a way to take my passion and make a little extra money with it.”
Which truly is the next step in the evolution of the modern male.
