The girl sat on her bed. Her hands were folded and she appeared to be daydreaming. She had a far away look in her eye. The phone was ringing, she couldn’t hear it. The television was blaring, she didn’t care. She was deep in thought. What was she to do. If this was the definition of love the best way she could describe it, was being totally mesmerized and at the same time, feeling as if reality did not exist.
The gentleman was a gem of that she was sure. His eyes were clear and had a depth that showed his very soul. It had started easy enough.
When did it change? How did it change? Where did someone go to find answers, for questions of the heart.
When she thought back over the past few years, she couldn’t remember a time that he wasn’t right in front of her. Anytime she needed help he would be by her side.
She put her head on her pillow and fell asleep. She was exhausted from the uncertainty of her life. She felt like she was on an emotional roller coaster. There were far more questions than answers. She slept fitfully throughout the night. There was a saying that sleep could cure many things. Matters of the heart were not included.
She dreamed of long, heartfelt kisses in the middle of the night. She saw the meaningful glances like they were part of a movie at the picture show. The dreams continued till the early morning light.
A new day was upon her and a decision had to be made. She stayed in bed until she didn’t have another minute to spare. She had to get ready for work. As she hurried to dress, she thought about her life. There was no way she could go on like this. It felt like a pressure on her chest that would not go away. Could this be what love felt like?
On the other side of town there was a gentleman suffering with the same type of ailment. He was lovesick at best and at the worst he felt like he was physically ill. He couldn’t put a name on what was wrong with him. He couldn’t sleep or eat for that matter. He was crazy about the girl. She had caught his eye from the beginning. She was everything that he wanted. Commitment was hard for him.
When they were together it felt right. It felt more than right. He felt like anything was possible as long as they were together. He paced back and forth wondering what to do. Every thought he had went straight out the window, the minute she came into view. There was no rationalization here. He had always felt that he was a loner. He thought he liked being a loner. Now his thoughts took him to places he didn’t want to go. He had lots of friends and a great family. If all this was true what was this. He couldn’t put a name on it.
He was an educated man. Who could he ask about this. Everyone would think he had lost his mind. It didn’t help that he had never mentioned these feelings to anyone. He wasn’t sure he accepted them himself. It would come as a surprise to all his closest friends. Actually some of them would be shocked. He put his hands through his hair and continued to pace. It wasn’t like he could go to a library and look up the answer. He didn’t even know what the question was. Life had been so simple before he’d met her. He did what he wanted when he wanted. Now he always thought of her before he did anything.
All he could think was that he had to get a serious grip on reality. He couldn’t go on like this. He was going to make himself sick. His world had been turned upside down. The problem was he didn’t know how or when it happened. If someone had hit him in the head, he could have understood that better than this.
This is a story of two people in love. The emotional pulling of the heartstrings. The independent nature of the couple shows through. It’s like a tug of war and they are both losing. They want to be together. This is very evident to anyone on the outside looking in. For each of them being on the inside looking out their feelings are clouded. If I was going to give a definition of love I would say it is a pull that is stronger than the two people involved. It’s like invisible strings pulling on your heart.
This scenario plays out around the world every single day. It may start as an infatuation and then at some point realization takes over. It becomes a love that books are written about. Commitments are given to each other. In the end I will say love knows no bounds. If it is meant to be then it shall be.
