The Miami Heat won their second consecutive NBA Championship last season against the San Antonio Spurs in a very impressive Finals. Even though they lacked a center position throughout the season, Chris Andersen stepped up and took the role. But Chris Andersen is the only big man the Heat had until now. The Heat went to having a great roster to improving to a better one. They did not lose a whole lot of players after winning the championship but they signed two good players. The Heat signed Greg Oden and Michael Beasley over the offseason and they can both be a good contribution to the team.
According to NBA-Statistics by Team-Yahoo Sports, the Miami Heat last season averaged only 38.6 rebounds per game which was last in the NBA. They also averaged only 8.2 offensive rebounds per game which was third to last. They may have struggled in this area but they still won a championship. Now they signed Greg Oden to help them. He was picked first in the draft in 2007 Draft. Oden is a good player but has suffered from injuries. Oden missed the whole 2007-2008 season due to surgery on his right knee. He averaged 8.9 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game in his second season. However he only played 61 games due to a knee and foot injury. Oden has had a history with injuries that have prevented him from playing but if he stays healthy then he can contribute to the Heat in a positive way with rebounding and defending the basket which are things the Heat struggled with.
The Miami Heat also got Michael Beasley who played with the Heat two seasons. He averaged 14.4 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game with the Heat. He is 6’10 so he is a good height for playing power forward or a tall small forward. He can shoot the mid-range shot, occasionally the three-point shot, and take it to the rim. He can also play decent defense. He averages 14.1 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game in his five-year career. They are not great numbers but they are good numbers to play as a backup player. However Beasley has had off-court issues with marijuana. He has been caught with marijuana four times in his career. Beasley can be a good player and help the Heat but if he continues with the issues of drugs or any other misbehavior then his reputation as an NBA player will be even worse.
I realize that other teams that have made big moves. Los Angeles Clippers got Doc Rivers as the new coach. Chicago Bulls got Derrick Rose back. Brooklyn Nets signed Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. And Houston Rockets signed Dwight Howard. But the Miami Heat still have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. They still have Mario Chalmers, Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Chris Andersen and kept their head coach Erik Spoelstra. They also improved over the offseason with Greg Oden and Michael Beasley. The Miami Heat look like a team that may win their third consecutive title
