It’s time to get in the mood for Halloween with my annual horror movie marathon. With all the great horror films released the last few years, it’s going to be a scary Halloween. Here are the top films that I’m adding to this year’s watch list.
This Spanish and Canadian horror film is scary and fast paced. After committing a terrible crime, a desperate father escapes with his children. Megan Charpentier (“R.L. Stines The Haunting Hour”) and Isabelle Nélisse (“Mirador”) portray the adorable children. Nélisse plays the younger sister who does an excellent job being creepy, especially when she eats bugs. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) and Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) also star in the movie. This movie is so creepy that I’m going to watch it while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.
‘Evil Dead’ (2013)
Since “Evil Dead” is a remake of a classic cult film, I didn’t expect a good movie. But the film stands on its own, so I’m adding it to the movie list. Five people visit a remote cabin to help a friend, but end up fighting a terrifying evil. The stars include Jan Levy (“Suburgatory”), Shiloh Fernandez (“The United States of Tara”), Lou Taylor Pucci (“The Story of Luke”), Jessica Lucas (“Cult”), and Elizabeth Blackmore (“Legend of the Seeker”).
‘407 Dark Flight’ (2012)
This year I’m adding a ghost story from Thailand. Probably one of the scariest ghost movies I’ve seen since “13 Ghosts”. It’s terrifying that a greedy airline fixes a crashed airplane and uses it for passenger flights. But, when the angry crash victims haunt the plane’s latest passengers, it gets scarier. The Thailand actors are Marsha Wattanapanich and Peter Knight.
Ethan Hawke (“Daybreakers”) portrays the true crime author, Ellison Oswalt, who investigates unsolved murders. When the author finds a dangerous connection between murders, he must protect his family. Not a very original movie, but it has an excellent script and great acting by Ethan Hawke. The twist at the movie’s end makes it a great movie to watch in preparation for Halloween. Also stars Juliet Rylance (“Days and Nights”), Fred Dalton Thompson (“Law and Order”, “The Good Wife”), and James Ransone (“Treme”).
Have a great Halloween filled with scary movies, haunted houses, and lots of candy.
