The following is a list of the teams that scored the most points in one quarter of an NFL game. The list is for most points scored in a quarter by one team, not combined points for a quarter by two teams.
The amount of points scored by the teams listed below in one quarter is pretty incredible. The games in which the teams set the record for most points scored in a quarter must have been incredibly fun and entertaining to watch.
Most Points Scored in One Quarter of an NFL Game by a Team
T-1. Green Bay Packers (1945) – 41 points
The Green Bay Packers set the NFL record for most points scored by a team in one quarter of an NFL game when they scored 41 points in the second quarter of a game vs the Detroit Lions played on October 7, 1945.
In the game, after a scoreless first quarter, the Lions actually scored a touchdown first in the second quarter, and then the Green Bay Packers went hog wild, scoring six touchdowns in the remainder of the quarter.
Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Don Hutson caught four of the six touchdowns (56, 46, 17, and six yards) in the quarter, while Clyde Goodnight also caught a 41 yard touchdown pass, and Ted Fritsch returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown. Hutson’s four TD catches in the quarter is still the NFL record for most touchdowns in a quarter by a player.
In addition, Don Hutson was the kicker for the Packers, and he made five PATs in the quarter, so he scored 29 points, which is also the NFL record for most points scored by a player in one quarter in NFL history. The sixth PAT was missed, otherwise the Packers would have scored 42 points in one quarter.
The combined total of 48 points scored by both teams in the second quarter is one shy of the NFL record of 49 points scored in a quarter by both teams. Green Bay won the game by a score of 57-21.
The combined total of 88 points scored in the game is well short of the NFL record for most points scored in a NFL game.
T-1. Los Angeles Rams (1950) – 41 points
On October 29, 1950, the Los Angeles Rams tied the NFL record for most points scored in one quarter, when they had 41 points in the third quarter of a game vs the Detroit Lions. The Rams scored six touchdowns in the quarter, and, like the Packers, missed one PAT, otherwise they would have scored 42 points in the quarter.
The Rams had four touchdown passes in the quarter, one each to Elroy Hirsch (31 yards), Glenn Davis (45 yards), Tom Fears (30 yards), and Bob Boyd (42 yards). The Rams also had a three yard rushing touchdown by Dan Towler, and Vitamin Smith returned a kickoff 93 yards for another touchdown in the quarter.
Norm Van Brocklin, who holds the NFL record for most passing yards in a game, threw all four touchdowns in the third quarter, and had five TD passes in the game. The Lions scored a touchdown in the third quarter on a 46 yard pass play, so both teams scored a combined 48 points in the quarter.
The combined 48 points in the third quarter is one shy of the NFL record of 49 points scored for one quarter. The Rams won the game by a score of 65-24.
The 1950 Rams could really score points, as the team also had games where they scored 70, 51, and 45 (twice) points that season.
