During Winter we buy thicker coats and wear gloves and hats, but do we think enough about our cars? If we aren’t, we should. Many people depend on their car to go back and forth to work since this is their only way of transportation. Since there is no back up plan let’s focus on what accessories we should buy for our car during the cold weather:
Snow tires – Making sure we have good tires is important, but having snow tires is necessary for better traction on snow in the heavy storms areas. Check with your local auto stores for pricing and installation. Some good brands to consider are Goodyear, Firestone and Dunlop.
Tire chains – These chains are useful on icy and steep roads as they can keep your car from skidding and causing unwarned accidents. Make sure you purchase the right size chains and are familiar with the installation process before you need them. You can find them at any local auto shop as well as online.
Snow brushes and Ice scrapers – Have these accessories handy as they are very useful to defrost and clean your icy windshield. For a faster windshield cleaning consider buying a heated ice scraper. You can plug it in the car’s outlet for a few minutes to get it heated. This will make your life a little easier in the mornings. Many of the ice scrapers have a snow brush attached so that you have two tools in one. Also don’t forget to keep a mitten in the car so that your hands are protected from the freezing snow while you de – ice your windshield.
Window covers – Another option to keeping your windshield clean at all times is purchasing a window cover. This will protect your car and save you time. Most covers are made for an universal use so you don’t have to worry about dimensions when you purchase them.
Snow shovel – You can find these at many hardware stores. Some shovels are made out of plastic while others from aluminum, and some are wider than others as they are made for industrial use. Make sure you have one handy as you may need to clean your driveway before being able to drive your car out. Another option to defrosting your driveway is plenty of salt. Just make sure you give it time to work before driving out.
Battery heaters – If you don’t have a garage and have to keep your car outside in frosty conditions, you may want to consider buying a battery warmer. This is like a blanket that you wrap around the car battery and plug it up with an extension cord to an outlet.
Hand and foot warmers – These products are useful and inexpensive. You can purchase them online and also at many local stores, including Walmart. Keeping some in the car at all times is a good idea, especially on long road trips during the Winter Holidays.
Purchase the winter car accessories you need now to avoid stress during the cold season. Prepare your car so that you will be ready for the road and not stuck in the snow.
