The following is a list of the players who had the most walks in a single game in major league baseball history. The record for most walks in a game by a player is six, and the record is held by four different players.
Two of the flour players recorded the six walks in a regulation nine inning game, while the other two players both had six walks in extra-inning games, both of which went 16 innings. Here is a trivia question for you as you look over the list of the four players.
Two of the four players with six walks in a game led the league in home runs during their careers. Which two players? (Answer below)
Most Walks in a Game by a Batter in Major League Baseball History
T-1. Walt Wilmot (1891) – 6
Walt Wilmot of the Chicago Colts set the record for most walks in a major league baseball game by a batter when he walked six times in a game vs the Cleveland Spiders played on August 22, 1891. The Colts won the game, 10-4.
Despite the six walk game, Walt Wilmot only walked 55 times in 1891. So 11% of his walks for the season came in just one record setting game. Wilmot’s six walks came in a nine inning game, and he only batted six times in the contest.
T-1. Jimmie Foxx (1938) – 6
On June 16, 1938, Jimmie Foxx of the Boston Red Sox tied the record for most walks in a game by a batter when he walked six times vs the St. Louis Browns. Foxx only came to the plate six times, so he never recorded an official at-bat in the game.
Jimmie Foxx scored two runs in the game in which he walked a record six times, as the Boston Red Sox beat the Browns by a score of 12-8. The box score for the game shows no intentional walks were issued that day, but Jimmie Foxx was a feared slugger, and you have to think he was pitched around the whole game.
Jimmie Foxx hit 50 home runs and drove in 175 runs in 1938. The 175 RBIs are tied for the fourth most in baseball history for a season. The six walks came in a nine inning game.
T-1. Andre Thornton (1984) – 6 (16 inning game)
Andre Thornton of the Cleveland Indians walked six times in a 16 inning game vs the Baltimore Orioles that was played on May 2, 1984. Thornton had eight plate appearances in the 16 inning game, and he did not get a hit in the two at-bats he had when he did not walk.
The Indians beat the Orioles, 9-7, in the game. Two of the six walks issued to Andre Thornton were intentional.
T-1. Jeff Bagwell (1999) – 6 (16 inning game)
Jeff Bagwell of the Houston Astros walked six times in a 16 inning game vs the Florida (now Miami) Marlins that was played on August 20, 1999. Bagwell had eight plate appearances in the 16 inning game, and he did not get a hit in the two at-bats when he did not walk.
The Astros defeated the Marlins, 6-4, in the game. Two of the six walks issued to Jeff Bagwell in the game were intentional.
