With the economy today, we all need to try and come up with some ideas that are virtually free in an attempt to entertain our children. In this article, you will find a few of my ideas that I’ve come up with to assist you in this endeavor.
For starters, children love to play with you, their parent or caregiver. This is probably their number one choice if you’d ask them. Whatever you’re doing, they are willing to “help”. When a child is about 3 to 5 years of age, everything is “fun” to them. So, take advantage of this inborn habit of theirs and make it work for you. If you have chores or cooking to do, have them help. It will not only be fun for them, but also educational as well. My daughter is 3 years old, soon to be 4, and loves to do the dishes. She also likes to help mix up my cake batter. These things are not only helpful to me, but entertaining to her as well. It’s great to take out two birds with one stone.
Another idea is to save bread crusts or old bread, find a spot nearby your home where there are ducks or fish and take your children to feed them once in awhile. I usually save our bread crusts and keep them in the freezer; every couple of months we take our kids to the local fish hatchery where there are both ducks and fish. They love it and so do the ducks!
Sing…kids love to sing songs! It makes them happy and I’m sure you’ll find it will make you happy too. A few of the songs I sing with my kids are: “I’m a little teapot”, “If your happy and you know it”, “Jesus loves me”, “Jesus loves the little children”, “The B-I-B-L-E”, “Old MacDonald”, “The Wheels on the bus”, etc. There are many choices to pick from and your kids will simply adore this activity.
Read to your kids; they will jump for joy when you ask them to pick out a book for story time. This is also a great idea to get them to lay down and take a nap. From the time my daughter was two years old, she didn’t want to nap anymore, so I would ask her to “pick out a book and we’ll lay down in mommy’s bed to read it.” She would jump up and down saying, “oh boy, oh boy”, run back to her room, pick a book and couldn’t get to my room fast enough. I’d read it to her and it never failed to get her to sleep.
Go outside and explore….tell them to search for small things like flowers, rocks or leaves. See how many different types and colors they can locate. My little ones like to take “nature walks at Pappy’s cabin” and look for leaves, acorns and flowers. It’s fun and educational.
Take them to a park if you don’t have outdoor toys of your own. Most children love to swing and go down the sliding board. This will give you some much needed down time as well. It’s always fun and relaxing to just forget your troubles and play with your kids. We have a swing set in our back yard so my kids swing rather frequently. It’s a great way to pass time and it gives me an excuse to get outside and play too.
Children love to color and play with stickers! Usually the dollar store has coloring books, crayons and stickers that are only $1.00 each. This is a great idea to entertain the little ones! In fact, the dollar store is my little girl’s favorite store, which is great for me because it’s cheap! LOL!
All of these ideas are relatively inexpensive if not free, so try some of them and reap the results. It’s been my experience that when you spend quality time with your kids, such as some of the previously mentioned activities, you generally have more well-behaved children; and who doesn’t want that?
