MTV Movie Awards Honors Movies That Are Popular With Movie-Goers

by fat vox

Finally, an awards show that does it right. I never understand why the MTV Movie Awards isn’t the pattern that all the others follow. It features movies that large audiences have actually seen and presents awards people care about. While Sound Editing is a skill worthy of recognition, it doesn’t have the same level of interest as Best Shirtless Performance. Only the MTV Movie Awards, which aired Sunday, April 14, had categories that just the average movie-goer cares about.

On no other awards show would Ted ever be nominated for Movie of the Year, but it was on the MTV Movie Awards. Deservedly so as Ted is the highest grossing original R rated comedy of all-time. Compare that to Amour, which was a Best Picture nominee for the Academy Awards. I don’t even know anyone who has seen Amour.

MOVIE OF THE YEAR

It makes sense to me that movies that the audience is familiar with should be featured. I am most certain that more people have seen the movies nominated in the top category for the MTV Movie Awards (Ted, Marvel’s The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Django Unchained, and Silver Linings Playbook) than have even ever heard of Beasts of the Southern Wild. Beasts of the Southern Wild was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The Avengers was the years top grossing film and wasn’t even one of the nine films on the ballot for an Oscar.

BEST WTF MOMENT

Yes, it’s really a category. Makes awards for Costume Design seem pretty lame. The nominees were Anna Camp Pitch Perfect, Denzel Washington Flight, Jamie Foxx and Samuel Jackson Django Unchained, Javier Bardem Skyfall, and Seth MacFarlane Ted.

Other categories included Best Fight, Best Kiss, Best Villain, Best Scared-as-Sh** Performance and more. All featuring nominees that the public know of. With the MTV Movie Awards, talked-about stars, such as Channing Tatum, aren’t just recognized as presenters, but are nominated for Best Shirtless Performance.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE

The host of the MTV Movie Awards was Rebel Wilson from Pitch Perfect, who set the comedic tone. She also performed a musical number with the rest of cast of Pitch Perfect.

The telecast will also feature the first look at Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Will Ferrell will be honored with the Comedic Genius Award. The MTV Trailblazer Award is presented to Emma Watson.
