In “Nashville” episode “It Must Be You,” romance is in the air, and our favorite country music stars pair off in both good and very ill-advised ways. Rayna tries to find financing for her new record label, while Scarlett does her best to hone her PR skills.
Go where the money is
Tandy convinces Rayna to attend the latest society benefit, where potential investors will be socializing in big hats at a polo match. It’s not Rayna’s scene at all, but she agrees to do what’s necessary for her new label. Unfortunately, despite some initial polite interest, the sisters discover that Tandy doesn’t have the best reputation in town after Lamar’s arrest. Though her involvement remains secret, most suspect that she knew what her dad was up to.
Juliette makes another bad choice
Juliette is surprised when she gets an invitation to the same event, since she’s never been welcome in that particular crowd. She’s horrified when she arrives and sees her married one-night-stand Charles Wentworth, and figures out that he’s the one who invited her. Despite her continued protests, he finally convinces her to hang out with him for a day, so she can see the real him.
Juliette isn’t all that impressed with his woeful tale about being a rich boy trapped in a loveless marriage. Still, once Charlie volunteers her for one of Teddy’s musical charity events, the two decide to work closely together. Very closely, in his hotel suite. Unfortunately his wife stops by and catches them in the act, though she herself remains unseen. From the burning anger in her eyes, we’re guessing the adulterers will soon feel the sting of her revenge.
Scarlett falls into familiar patterns
Rayna reassures Scarlett that her PR skills are fine, and that Jeff had no right to treat her so poorly at the last event. She sets up a performance for her sole artist at the Bluebird, where Scarlett can impress and then charm the music critics that will be present. Scarlett’s afraid of messing up, so she turns to Avery for advice, since he knows quite well what it’s like to screw up a promising career.
Avery is happy that he can help her, and seems intent on proving to her that he’s not the selfish jerk he once was. Scarlett is impressed enough that she gets nostalgic for those romantic feelings, and they end up sleeping together. Later, at the bar, she wonders if it was a mistake. Zoey seems to think it was, but Avery is hoping he might get a second chance with his ex.
The “girl code”
Meanwhile, Zoey is regretting her own choices. She’s been avoiding Gunnar, and when he finally confronts her, she confesses that she’s feeling guilty over breaking the “girl code.” It’s not right for her to sleep with her BFF’s ex, especially since Scarlett hasn’t really moved on yet. At the Bluebird that night, Zoey notices that Gunnar is still staring longingly at his ex. She gets jealous and decides she doesn’t care about the girl code after all. Gunnar doesn’t take much convincing, and soon the two are making out.
The right woman
Megan asks Deacon to go with her to the polo match, and he finally agrees. As usual, he feels awkward when he sees Rayna, and tries to stay away from her. Megan reassures him that she understands about the whole Rayna issue, and Deacon loves her even more when he sees that she really isn’t threatened at all.
Another suitor for Rayna
At the benefit, Rayna had hoped to ask Juliette if Scarlett could perform on her tour. But when she offers the young singer some friendly advice about sleeping with a married man, Juliette lashes out and tells her she won’t be helping Rayna with promoting her new artist.
Rayna finds an unexpected savior in big country star Luke Wheeler, who agrees to let Scarlett open up for him on tour. But Rayna’s stunned when he kisses her, and he clearly seems hopeful for more. Rayna doesn’t seem like she’s ready to jump into yet another relationship, but now that he’s helping her out, she’ll have to tread lightly.
