The National Western Stock Shows history dates back to 1906 when a group of breeds decided to come together to exchange ideas about their livestock practices. The idea of the Western Stock Show was pioneered by three individuals that felt they could bring a fair market price for their livestock and compete on an equal platform as their Eastern rivals.
The Early History of the National Western Stock Show
At the dawn of the first Stock Show broke the horizon in Denver Colorado on Monday January 29 1906. 336 different specimens were entered to be judged, as the town folded up their daily activities and poured into take part in the historical event. The show did not gain national attention until 1910, when they began allowing all cattle to compete in the judging. Which lead to a 6 million deal in 1914 for the Hermosa Ranch of Colorado Spring. Bring Elias M. Ammons, George Ballentine, and Fred P. Johnson original idea full-circle and sealing the National Western Stock Show as a historical success.
The Blossoming Of the Stock Show
Enough though the main purpose of the Stock Show was to show case that year’s flock of livestock. It was hard to resist the draw of the crowd and the demand for entertainment. By 1908 a horse show was also added to the event calendar which paved the way for the 1931 introduction of the rodeo as an attraction. What once was an event meant to inject revenue into the livestock industry. Soon, became a way for Denver to boost its national status and economic structure by holding the annual event. In which they added these spectator events to the already striving National Stock Show.
The Live-stock Is Not The Only Thing Ear Tagged
As the success and popularity of the National Stock Show gained global attention, it began to take on a life of its own. What once began as a simple way to market and profit from hard work and labor. Became a tourist attraction for those that wished to dabble in the city, and enjoy the festivities that only the National Stock Show could provide. It was not long before the event was rolling off of every school child and adult alike as January drew near every year after 1906.
Encased in every great idea a historical event so ripples time thereafter. Though, in its humble beginnings the National Stock Show was originally meant for a way to branch a divided gap for equal trade for livestock. It transformed a city and etched a beacon that continues to build steam and break barrier as it puts a another notch in its belt as it becomes fatted by the hoots and howls that drive the cattle to market each year.
