NFL Head Coaches with the Most Career Wins

by fat vox

The following is a list of the NFL head coaches with the most career wins. I’m only counting regular season wins here, not postseason wins. Every head coach with at least 200 career wins is listed.

NFL Head Coaches with the Most Career Wins

1. Don Shula – 328

Don Shula holds the NFL record for most career wins by a head coach with 328. Shula won 71 games with the Baltimore Colts from 1963 to 1969, and then won 257 games with the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1995.

In his career, Don Shula made it to the Super Bowl six times and won the game twice (Super Bowls VII and VIII with the Dolphins). His overall record was 328-156-6, for a fantastic winning percentage of .678.

Despite all the wins and great winning percentage, Don Shula did not win enough Super Bowls to be considered the greatest NFL head coach of all-time.

2. George Halas – 318

George Halas, who coached the Chicago Bears for 40 years, has the second most wins among head coaches with 318. Halas’ overall record was 318-148-31 (.682).

3. Tom Landry – 250

Tom Landry won 250 NFL games as a head coach, the third most in league history. Landry coached the Dallas Cowboys from 1960 to 1988, and his overall record was 250-162-6 (.607). Tom Landry led the Cowboys to five Super Bowls, winning two (VI and XII).

4. Curly Lambeau – 226

With 226 wins, Curly Lambeau ranks fourth among NFL head coaches with the most wins. The 226 wins are what Pro Football Reference credits Lambeau with. The Pro Football Hall of Fame says Lambeau won 229 games.

Curly Lambeau coached the Green Bay Packers for many years, and Lambeau Field in Green Bay is named for him.

5. Paul Brown – 213

Including his stats from the AAFC, Paul Brown won 213 games as a head coach. Brown won 158 games with the Cleveland Browns, who are named for him, and also won 55 more games with the Cincinnati Bengals.

While the Browns are named for Paul Brown, the stadium the Bengals play in is called Paul Brown Stadium. Paul Brown’s overall record was 213-104-9 (.672).

6. Marty Schottenheimer – 200

Though he never made it to the Super Bowl, let alone won one, head coach Marty Schottenheimer won 200 games in the NFL.

Schottenheimer won 101 games with the Kansas City Chiefs, 47 games with the San Diego Chargers, 44 games with the Browns, and eight games with the Washington Redskins. Marty Schottenheimer’s overall record was 200-126-1 (.613).
