The following is a list of NFL teams that went undefeated during the regular season. I’ve broken down the teams based upon whether or not they had any ties during the regular season, and whether or not they went on to win a championship during the same season they went undefeated.
NFL Teams That went Undefeated
Undefeated NFL Teams with No Ties Who Won Super Bowl or NFL Championship
1972 Miami Dolphins – 17-0
The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only NFL team to go undefeated during the regular season and go on to win the Super Bowl. The 1972 Miami Dolphins were a perfect 14-0 during the regular season, and then they won two playoff games and beat the Washington Redskins, 17-0, in Super Bowl VII.
1948 Cleveland Browns – 15-0
The 1948 Cleveland Browns, playing in the AAFL, went 14-0 during the regular season, and then won the AAFL Championship game, 49-7, over the Buffalo Bills. While this was not in the NFL, the Browns, Bills and San Francisco 49ers from the AAFL, all merged into the NFL in 1950.
Undefeated NFL Teams with Ties
Prior to the introduction of playoffs in 1932, the following NFL teams went undefeated with ties.
- 1920 Akron Pros – 8-0-3
The 1920 Akron Pros went 8-0-3 during the 1920 season in the APFA, the predecessor of the NFL. Fritz Pollard, who along with Bobby Marshall were the first two African-Americans to play in the NFL, was on the 1920 Akron Pros. In 1921, Fritz Pollard was named co-head coach of the Pros, becoming the first African-American head coach in the NFL.
In a controversial decision, the Akron Pros were declared the champions of the league in 1920 by a league vote, and awarded the Brunswick-Balke-Callender Cup. Both the Decatur Staleys (10-1-2 record) and the Buffalo All-Americans (9-1-1) were not happy with the decision, since both teams won more games than the Akron Pros did.
- 1922 Canton Bulldogs – 10-0-2
The 1922 Canton Bulldogs went 10-0-2 during the regular season, and were named the 1922 NFL Champions on the basis of their record.
- 1923 Canton Bulldogs
The 1923 Canton Bulldogs went 11-0-1 during the regular season, and were named the 1923 NFL Champions based upon their regular season record.
- 1929 Green Bay Packers – 12-0-1
The 1929 Green Bay Packers went 12-0-1 during the regular season, and were named the 1929 NFL Champions on the basis of their record.
