Our Complete Kitchen and Dining Room Remodel

by fat vox

This kitchen and dining room remodel includes paint, flooring, appliances, cabinets and lighting. The walls in the kitchen were originally painted yellow. They were repainted with white latex paint. The latex paint is easily cleaned and allows you to wipe away any food or oil splattered on the walls while cooking without leaving stains. The white color makes the room look brighter and aids in lighting. The cost for painting the two adjoining rooms was $140.00.

The stove and oven were quite dated. It was replaced with a flat top stove which is easier to clean and more energy efficient. The cost was $500.00. There was no dishwasher or garbage disposal. Both were installed. The cost of the garbage disposal was $150 and the dishwasher was $250.00.

The existing cabinets were press wood with formica countertops. These were removed and replaced with oak cabinets and granite countertops. The oak is a much more durable material and the granite is more resistant to heat, chipping and stains. Both materials are better quality and will have a longer life than the original. The cost for both was 800.00 which also included a bar that separates the dining room and kitchen.

Prior to the remodeling, the kitchen floor was covered with brown indoor-outdoor carpeting and the dining room had linoleum flooring. The carpeting in the kitchen was replaced with ceramic tile and the linoleum in the dining room with laminate tile of an oak finish. The cost of replacing the flooring in both rooms was $400.00.

A standard, single light fixture was the only light in the kitchen. It was replaced with 3-light system with individual fixtures that could be repositioned independently. This allows us to focus light in various areas of the kitchen as well as onto the bar. This lighting fixture cost $45.00. There was a chandelier in the dining room. It was replaced with a more up to date version with removable glass panes which provides easier cleaning. A dimmer switch was also installed. The cost of the chandelier was $75.00.

I purchased all of the materials myself from a home improvement store. The cost for the materials was $2360.00. The installation was performed by a contractor who charged $1300.00 to complete the project. The entire cost of remodeling the kitchen and dining room was $3660.00. The project was completed in 5 days.

Remodeling the kitchen and dining room has provided conveniences and time saving devices not available previously. In addition, the brighter colors and improved appearance has created an environment much more pleasant for meal times and entertaining.
