We learn about a whole new side to the Machine on Tuesday’s “Person of Interest” episode, “Mors Praematura.” Things may be more complicated than Finch (Michael Emerson) originally thought, and they are about to get even more complicated.
The latest number is Tim Sloan (Kirk Acevedo), an estate investigator who is trying to figure out where all the junk belonging to a dead hoarder is supposed to go. Finch soon learns that Sloan is looking into the death of his foster brother on the side.
Shaw is with Root!
Meanwhile, Shaw has disappeared, and it doesn’t take Reese (Jim Caviezel) long to find that Root (Sarah Shahi) is the culprit who took her. The only problem is that they are working together, at least temporarily. Shaw would like nothing more than to get back to her normal “work schedule,” but apparently the Machine wants her to work for Root for a bit.
Everyone appears to have a different job, all set in motion by the Machine: Finch helps Sloan, Reese searches for Shaw, Shaw follows a set of cryptic messages given to her by the Machine via Root, and Root acts as a messenger. Then everything seems to go sideways when Sloan is captured by Peter Collier (Leslie Odom, Jr.), the man who will kill in order to fight for the right to privacy, and Root is captured by the CIA as part of the Machine’s plan.
It turns out that Sloan’s brother, Jason Greenfield (Michael Esper), is still alive and being held by the CIA after his former group — Collier’s group, Vigilance — killed someone. Root is locked up beside Jason by the CIA, which is right where she intended to be. They are soon moved into a van, to be transported to a new location. Shaw is the driver, pretending to be a CIA agent (the Machine provided all the necessary codes for her to fake her way through, seamlessly).
Everything comes together when Collier sets off a small explosion, causing the van to tip over. Reese is there to find Sloan, and is surprised to find Shaw and Root as well. He has no time for them, however. Their job is to save Jason, but Reese’s is to save Sloan. Collier gives him a choice: save Sloan or go after Collier, but of coarse Reese is there to save his number, so that is what he opts for.
What about Root?
Root and Shaw complete their mission, which leaves Shaw wondering, “Now what?” Knock out Root, that’s what! Shaw doesn’t much like being kidnapped, even if it’s all the Machine’s doing.
So now Root is the one being held prisoner… by Finch! He knows how to do it right to keep her away from the Machine, but what if he’s going against the Machine’s “wishes”? Root informs Finch that the Machine may get “angry,” but he points out that it’s possible the Machine wants her to be locked away. Who’s right? We’ll just have to wait and see.
“Person of Interest” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
