Marketing your photography can sometimes be hard if you don’t have the proper skills and knowledge, but here are some smart and easy ways to market yourself, all at a low cost. When marketing any business take the time to do research in and ask yourself the questions: Who do I want to market to? What is the age range of the people I am marketing to? You want to be specific with this and stick to it, so that you know your target market. Then, you start with the basics.
The easiest way to market is to take advantage of social media; these sites are popping up all around the internet from Facebook, to Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr, all of these sites are marketing materials. The amount of friends and followers you have are all considered clientele, they will all one day need your services so let them know that you are around by updating on a regular, speaking, and also letting them know about your business. Even offer them a discount because they are your friends and followers, people love freebies so dish one out every now and then.
Flyers are a good way to market your services. If you are good with graphics, design a flyer, have it printed, and when you go out to shoot candids you can pass them out. You can also hire people to pass them out in mass quantities. They are a good and effective way to promote yourself, flyers that are made these days are so small and convenient that they can be carried anywhere in anything.
Every business person should have business cards. You want your potential clients to have a piece of you wherever they go. Business cards are pocket/wallet sized bits of you that will keep the client with all of your contact information on hand.
Gift certificates keep the client coming back, give the client something free or a discount with the certificate and you are sure to have a return customer. Gift certificates can be used just like flyers, but you want to give them to a client that has already had your services, so that they will be tempted to come back to receive the offer.
Every event photographer knows that the event they are shooting is filled with a room of potential clients. If there is a DJ ask the DJ if you can put some of your cards at his booth, if there is a bar ask the bartender if you can put your cards there also. Be sure to take as many photos as possible and network to get your services out there.
Word of Mouth
Nothing beats W.O.M. this above all things is the most effective, because your actual clients bring people to you. We love referrals! Yes we do, everybody does. So when you have your next shoot be sure to ask your client to refer, refer, refer. If you are an established photographer, you can offer a referral fee, if not just ask for the referral and if your work is good people will surely refer you.
