There’s no doubt about it. Chemotherapy can cause many visible changes to your body and appearance. While I had been forewarned, I was not prepared for my fingernails turning black on me. When my toes started to ache excessively I didn’t realize that my toenails would soon be a thing of the past temporarily. After having a decent head of hair, it was an adjustment when it all fell out. But I am still the same person in my inner core. This has been part of my cancer journey. I am glad to know that even with all these changes there are ways that you can counter some of the negative effects.
Make-up – Wear cosmetics that make you look natural. If it is properly applied it can enhance your beauty. Be careful of the brands that you use too. It’s not necessary to always go with the most expensive brand but it should at least be reputable and carry good products.
Wig – If you don’t like the bald look, purchase a wig. You’ll have to make a choice if you want human hair or the synthetic kind. Wear something that is similar to what you’re used to. Again it should enhance your look not distract.
Jewelry – This accessory doesn’t have to be costly to make you feel like a million bucks. So whether it’s a pair of earrings, bracelets, brooches, pins or necklace, choose them wisely in order to be able to wear with several outfits. It’s sometimes the little things that make the big difference. Of course if you are allergic to certain metals found in jewelry you may have to spend a little more. It will be well worth the investment because you are investing in you.
Hats and caps – These items come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. They come to the rescue when you need a covering on your head to protect it from harmful rays from the sun. Hats and caps can add a polished look for that outfit that needs just a little more pizzazz.
Scarves – They are so very versatile and add a nice pop for any outfit. Try wearing them around your neck, waist or around a hat to make a statement of its own. Check out your local thrift store for possible good buys.
Manicure/Pedicure – If you have the money occasionally treat yourself to this delight. It’s a given that you will have multiple choices of colors and designs to choose from. If that proves to be too costly for your budget then do it yourself at a more economical price.
It’s a given that no one wants to be diagnosed with any kind of cancer. But unfortunately some of us will. If you find yourself in that situation know that you are still a person of great worth and value. Hopefully by using these tips you will feel good about yourself.
