Assuming you haven’t run across this article by accident, congratulations on being told you’re pregnant with twins! Once you give birth, you’re in for an exciting time of joy having two children who will forever be connected based on being born at the same time. But what you go through over the next nine months will require extensive care and thought about the risks. At the same time, many healthy options will still be widely available to you that can help you through the probable and possible complications.
Expect More Acute Morning Sickness
The reason you’ll have more acute morning sickness in the first trimester is because of an increase of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone is typically found in women pregnant with twins and increases nausea for the first 12 weeks. As well, this could be compounded with other aspects to carrying twins, namely dealing with back pain due to the weight and sleeping issues.
According to WebMD, the nausea usually alleviates after the first trimester is over.
You’ll Be Gaining More Weight Than with Single Pregnancies
When you’re holding two little human beings inside you, it’s understandable that you’re going to be gaining more weight than if you have just one baby. Expect anywhere from 30 to 35 extra pounds if you have an average weight. However, you still need to keep a certain amount of weight on you for the protection of the twins. For a non-overweight woman, the general guideline is 30-54 extra pounds. Overweight women should fall below that to a maximum of 50 pounds or below.
Buy Some Folic Acid
Women pregnant with twins end up needing more folic acid (B vitamins) to reduce the chances of the fetuses developing neural tube defects. Folic acid also helps reduce the risk of having a miscarriage, something that’s far too common with women carrying twins. Folic acid supplements are easily findable in any health food store and even in many general grocery stores.
Plus, it doesn’t hurt to continue taking folic acid after your pregnancy since it also prevents cancer and many other health issues.
Prepare for a Premature Birth
Compared to a single birth at 40 weeks, it’s more than likely your twins will be born a few weeks earlier. In some cases, it could be even earlier that that, giving more risk to the twins having low birth weights and developing health issues. This shouldn’t necessarily incite panic, because many clinics provide ways to help premature babies through the storm so they can become healthy. The best approach is to avoid stress and relax as often as possible, even if nothing can potentially stop early births from happening.
