‘Pretty Little Liars’ Sets Up for a Big Finale

by fat vox

It looks like Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) will be sporting a black hoodie around Rosewood, because in tonight’s Pretty Little Liars episode, “I’m Your Puppet,” it was revealed that she has decided to join the A Team. This sets the stage for the finale on March 19, “A dAngerous gAme,” which promises to be filled with revelAtions and answers.

Towards the end of “I’m Your Puppet,” we see Spencer with a black hoodie and two tickets to the puppet show that ‘A’ had taken Ezra’s son, Malcom(Teo Briones) to, making it appear that Spencer completed her first assignment. Spencer learned earlier in the episode how Mona (Janel Parrish) was able to escape Radely, which makes it possible for her to leave the premises. Pretty Little Liars writer Jonell Lennon responded to a Tweet from a fan asking if it was indeed Spencer that picked up Malcom and took him to the carnival. She replied, “yup!,” which pretty much confirms it. It is unclear if Spencer really has turned to the dark side, or it she is just trying to uncover information from the inside. Many are currently suspecting the latter.

At the very end of the episode, we get a glimpse of the second dead body that was found in the woods. The body has yet to be identified, but the camera zooms in on the ‘901 free at last’ tattoo, the same tattoo that Toby (Keegan Allen) had, and the one that Spencer saw that made her believe it was Toby. When we saw the tattoo tonight however, it looked like it was smuged and wearing off, appearing to not be a real tattoo. It was confirmed that the body was a young male, so if it isn’t Toby, then there is a good chance that it is Jason (Drew Van Acker). We know that Jason is being targeted as he is the last living member of the N.A.T. club, and he has not been seen or heard from since the text message he sent to Emily (Shay Mitchell) telling her he was laying low in Virginia.

As for the mysterious girl in the red coat, her identity is said to be revealed in the finale. There are a few possibilities as to who it could be. Jenna (Tammin Sursok) is returning to Rosewood next week, and she has been previously seen wearing a red coat, specifically when she was driving around a drugged Emily. CeCe (Vanessa Ray) has also been suspicious, even moreso tonight when Spencer discovered that she was visiting Mona and she had an unpleasant past with Alison (Sasha Pieterse). Melissa Hastings (Torrey Devitto) has not been ruled out as being the lady in red either, as her name keeps coming up when it comes to Ali and events that happened the night of her death. They are not the only possibilities, however.

Warning: Book Spoilers Below

Since season 1, hints and clues have been dropped that the writers could be going the direction of the book series where Ali had a twin sister, Courtney. In the books, Courtney was mentally ill, and she tricked her parents into thinking she was Ali, which caused the real Ali to be sent to Radley in her place. Ali later murdered Courtney, and became ‘A.’ The writers will probably not go about this in the exact same way if they do decide to go this route, as they have been known to shake things up when it comes to their adaptation of the books.

The biggest clues were first revealed in the Halloween episode of season 2. Ali told a story about a murderous girl that killed her twin sister and then was sent to the mental institution. In the same episode, there was a frame in the background of Ali’s bedroom that had a picture of Jason, with a picture of Ali on both sides of him. Underneath the three pictures, there was a quote in french that mentioned twins.

Since that episode, there have been other indications here and there as well as a lot of fan theories as to how they would incorporate the twin storyline. “Pretty Little Liars” creator Marlene King even Tweeted a picture of two little blonde girls wearing red coats back in December.

In “I’m Your Puppet,” Spencer sees ghost Ali, who tends to visit the girls a lot. Ghost Ali makes a remark about how sixth grade was the best year, and Spencer responds saying that she didn’t know her then. Ali replies “you didn’t even know me when you knew me.” In the prequel book “Ali’s Pretty Little Lies,’ it is revealed that the switch happened in sixth grade.

There are many ways the writers can go, and the wait is almost over. The finale will reveal ‘red coat’s’ identity, answer other questions, and set up for season four. “A dAngerous gAme” airs Tuesday March 19.
