Pretty Little Liars is all about secrets. Every character has one….or ten. From Melissa’s fake pregnancy, to Hanna’s eating disorder and all the spaces in between. However, some characters don’t seem to have a secret big enough to compete with the others. Compared to what we are used to seeing on the show, some characters’ secrets are completely boring and don’t make the show more interesting. So, who should be cast off?
Nerdy guys finish last.
Lucas Gottesman is my pick for the character to go. He’s the only truly nerdy character in Rosewood that has stayed just that, a nerd. His crush on Hanna was totally cliche, nothing creative there. He hates Alison because she taunted him like everyone else and he’s known for working for the yearbook. Can someone grab me some pajamas? This back story is putting me to sleep.
The PLL writers attempted to show us Lucas’ dark side when we found out he smashed Ali’s memorial. Also, they wrote a gambling problem into the mix, yawn. Beyond that, they made Lucas look extremely untrustworthy on multiple occasions and solidified the fact that he has worked with the “A team” in the first episode of season four. I believe that the writers haven’t put enough effort into his character.
Lucas is not significantly involved in any of the characters lives. Once Caleb came into Hanna’s life they tried to keep him in the show by making him become Caleb’s friend, what happened to that? Also, the one unique secret they have shared about his character (gambling) is already out in the open and has been resolved. The only thing Lucas’ character seems to be used for is to do some of “A’s” dirty work but why? He has a grudge against Ali just like everyone else but it doesn’t seem like he has anything to lose if he doesn’t listen to “A”. If there is something, they haven’t clued us in on it at all.
What would change?
At this point in the series, if Lucas was written off, things wouldn’t change much. “A” would have to find another person to work with, which we all know could happen very easily. No other character would be put in jeopardy without him, except for Caleb since he is supposed to be living with Lucas. However, there are rumors that Caleb will leave the show anyway. The plot would still go in the same direction. Lucas should get a great photography job a few states away and that should be the end of his story.
The PLL writers really dropped the ball on this character, I’m not sure if there is anything they can do to make the audience interested in Lucas again.
