As everyone knows Hurricane Sandy did massive destruction to our barrier Islands on October 29, 2012, starting from the South of Long Beach Island and up to the North through New York and beyond. Rebuilding Long Beach Island after Hurricane Sandy has been very challenging, but we here in New Jersey are all Jersey Strong.
The devastation was unbelievable to see with your own eyes once we were permitted to get back on the Island, but needed to show proof of ownership of our residence. The back bays began to fill up one day before Hurricane Sandy even hit landfall.
The meteorologist were right on the money when they said Hurricane Sandy would make landfall in and around Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Not even a super storm such as Sandy will hold the people of New Jersey back from doing anything, and that includes rebuilding our Island that we all love.
People were warned in plenty of time to get off the barrier Islands and get to higher grounds. Some listened and then there were those that thought they could ride out the storm like the storm the previous year in 2011 when Hurricane Irene hit the Coastline. Hurricane Irene didn’t hit as hard as expected, so in my opinion people thought that the meteorologist could be wrong and many didn’t listen to fair warning to get out and get out now.
This was a storm that can and would do horrific damage beyond anyone’s belief, and it did just that. Hurricane Sandy destroyed properties, businesses, and hundreds of thousands of lives all within 12 hours time.
When Hurricane Sandy made landfall the tidal surges were unbelievable and in some spots on Long Beach Island the Ocean met the Bay. The ocean took the beaches right across the Island and filled the roads and properties with feet of sand that once was our pure white beautiful beaches.
At the South end of the Island Mobile Home parks were destroyed. Home were washed off their foundations crashing into the homes next door. Garages that were under million dollar beach front homes were completely gone as if they were never there. The homes standing tall on just piles with nothing underneath was a site to see. It was just horrible to see this with my own eyes.
Our TV stations did a wonderful job filming and letting us know what they saw, but to see it first hand with your own eyes was enough to tear your heart out. Once we were aloud to enter the Island after about a week, residents with proper ID and proof of residence would see exactly what this super storm has done to their homes, businesses and their lives.
We are very strong people of New Jersey and will rebuild each home, each business one at a time. It will take some time to get back to the way the Island was before Hurricane Sandy , but when we are done, the Island will be bigger and better than before. Everyone has helped each other in so many ways. Giving a helping hand to mankind and being closer to each other like never before.
That is why we are Jersey Strong. We never will give up, and will never let a storm such as Sandy get us down.
Our beaches are back to the way they were before the hurricane, but this time the dunes were built up higher than previously to have better protection in case of another storm like Hurricane Sandy, in which I never want to see happen again.
Work continues to get everything in shape for our residents and our visitors to come and enjoy Long Beach Island for the summer of 2013.
Come on back to our Island and enjoy your vacation just like you did before Sandy TRIED to take it from us.
