My journey to veganism has brought with it many epiphanies. For instance, what is a treat? In the past, having a treat involved treating myself to a fat butt and cheesecake thighs. Is that really a treat? How is that a good thing, exactly? Vegan treats are very different from conventional treats. Not only are they absolutely delicious, they’re actually good for you. Here’s why I’ve been redefining treats as a vegan and why I think you should try it too.
I think in different terms now.
When I see things like donuts, pop and candy, I don’t crave them. I want the good stuff instead. All that sugar, fat and calories just doesn’t appeal to me. Plus, I think in terms of the impact that “treat” has on other animals and the earth. That makes it so unappealing. I’m just not interested. I do still love chocolate. Of course, I opt for the vegan, fair trade kind. I also don’t have it as often as I used to or eat as much in one sitting.
All my food is an adventure.
I don’t really need conventional treats any more. I’ve been having so much fun trying new things and coming up with interesting combinations, that everything I eat is a treat. We try something new every night for dinner. During the day, I make interesting salads, sandwiches and more for lunch. It’s not the same old cheese, tomato, lettuce, bread, mayo combo any more. In fact, lately, I’m not even missing the cheese.
Healthy food has more flavor.
Since becoming vegan, I’ve also noticed that healthy treats taste better than conventional ones. They’re absolutely bursting with flavor. We make wonderful fruit smoothies right at home in our blender. They’re way better than ice cream on so many levels. I used to love ice cream. Now, it tastes bland and fatty to me. I crave the pure taste of those smoothies instead.
Being vegan feels like removing my blinders.
All that gooey, globby fatty food I used to eat, tastes exactly like what it actually is now. Macaroni and cheese used to be one of my favorite foods. It’s not a treat to me now. When I see it, I see a big bowl of fatty, empty calories. I’d much rather have a plate full of colorful, varied veggies served on my new favorite; non-GM pasta with avocado sauce. Now, that’s a treat.
