Yesterday was what I like to refer to as a “lazy day.” It was cold and rainy outside to the point my wife and I really didn’t have the energy to do much of anything after work, including making dinner. We didn’t have any homemade frozen dinners in our freezer (we haven’t had much for leftovers lately) so, since I had to run up to Walgreen’s for some cat food anyway, I decided to just buy a couple of them.
The one I ended up purchasing for my wife was Healthy Choice Sweet Sesame Chicken from their Café Steamers product line. There really wasn’t any particular reason why I purchased this particular dinner for her other than the fact my selection was limited and it looked like something she would enjoy. And, to be honest, I was frowning a bit from the $4 price because I was expecting it not to be worth the money. However, I did end up with it and, for the most part; it was a pretty decent dinner.
Making this dinner was actually pretty easy (something that is always going to win some brownie points with me when I don’t feel like cooking). I didn’t even need to cut the plastic film cover; I just put it in the microwave for a few minutes. The separate steaming tray was a pretty nice touch because it allowed the vegetables to be steamed while keeping them separated from the sauce until it was served. In comparison, I have had plenty of other products that would have required me to cook the vegetables and sauce separately.
I was able to taste this dinner before giving it to my wife and, for the most part, I thought it was decent tasting. It was definitely a frozen dinner and isn’t something I would describe as restaurant quality. But, it wasn’t as bad as some other frozen dinners I’ve purchased.
There were a couple things I didn’t like about this product. The first was the quantity. I wasn’t the one eating it and, fortunately, my wife wasn’t overly hungry. Otherwise, there would not have been enough food in it. And, it definitely wasn’t worth the money as a result of that quantity.
Ironically, another thing I found I wasn’t crazy about was the steamer basket. Again, I liked this when cooking the food. But, at the same time, it also looked like an awful big waste of plastic considering it gets thrown away right after. I decided to be environmentally friendly and recycle it. But, even then, it just seemed like excess.
As a result, while this product did prove to be an OK purchase in a pinch, I don’t think it is something I would be interested in purchasing again.
