There is no shortage of reviews of Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich, and for good reason. This is quite possibly the best book of financial advice on the market. I say that as someone who has read his fair share of financial self-help books, which deal in unrealistic advice and vague pseudo-solutions. I Will Teach You To Be Rich is very different in that regard, giving you not only actionable advice and sound methods but even scripts of what to say when dealing with bankers, creditors, you name it!
The book has been out for a while now, and the title comes from Ramit Sethi’s blog where he talks about finance, psychology, landing a dream job, etc. The first thing many will notice about Mr. Sethi’s writing is the “breezy” tone. He is not your run of the mill financial guru whose flat, dry tone will bore you to tears. Reading the book was quite fun thanks to the strange humor which runs throughout. Learning about stocks and bonds is not a very exciting prospect but Mr. Sethi succeeds in making the subject highly interesting with his offbeat humor.
Also, unlike the average financial guru who extols the wonders of budgeting, Mr. Sethi thinks that budgets are ridiculous and unrealistic. Rather than pinch pennies and save a few cents here and there, why not learn to make more money through negotiating: a topic he covers in the book and his blog. By focusing on the big wins, you simplify your life and can splurge on the things you love while cutting out the things you hate. This is made even easier by automating your finances. This is key: let your online banks and services do all the work for you by setting up automatic payments for everything.
Lastly, he covers the topic of investing very well, and teaches you that anyone can invest in the stock market and become filthy rich. It’s really not that difficult, provided you are patient and continue to invest regularly. It’s usually an intimidating topic, but Mr. Sethi takes all the fear out of it and makes you excited to begin! The book will take you out of your comfort zone but that is the only way to grow and evolve as a person.
This book is a classic and should be recommended reading in business curricula around the country. Everyone should get a copy and put the advice contained therein to use. You won’t stress about money any more, grow your net worth, and learn negotiating skills which you can apply across the board. That is what the core idea behind I Will Teach You To Be Rich is all about: improving your quality of life.
