Battlestar Galactica The Mini-Series (Sci Fi 2003) is a re-make of the 1980’s series of the same name. For those of us out there who are huge science fiction fans you will not be disappointed with this series. This 3 hour program is a great epic space drama that introduces you to the entire modern Battlestar Galactica Series.
Three elements make this introductory story great. There are great actors, a racy adaptation of the original storyline, and the modern graphics and Star Wars like cut scenes put the icing on the cake.
The style of show is science fiction, but it has a powerful dramatic angle -almost movie like. The key performers that make this series are the stars Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, and Tricia Helfer.
The Main Stars
Olmos plays (Commander William Adama) the fatherly commander of the Battle Star fleet, McDonnell plays (Laura Roslin) the newly elected President of the 12 colonies after the crisis; she balances the commander’s decisions with her human practicality, and together they work for the survival of the human race. And Helfer plays (Number Six) the evil cyborg Cylon nemesis who is a threat to humanities survival.
This storyline modernizes the original television script with an added threat of cyborg Cylons; which are humanoid robots that disguise themselves among the multitudes. There are echoes of the film Bladerunner (1982) here. And the nemesis played by Helfer is very sexy, she gives the show a different angle; she is a Marilyn Monroe like femme fatal; seductive and alluring, as well as menacing. The original show was somewhat boring and more G rated; this show gives the story a more racy and adult spin.
Orginial BSG versus Modern BSG
In the original Battlestar Galactica (1978 ABC) in the pilot episode, you have the fully robotic Cylons wiping out millions of humans and their colonies. They are successful in their attempts they leave only a few colonies and Captain Adama’s fleet of Battlestar Galactica. The survivors have to contend only with the threat of the robotic Cylons.
They never had to deal with humanoid Cylons in their midst. The 2003 adaptation has more intrigue, tension, and uncertainty. The modern series adds a secondary threat of secret infiltration; this creates added suspension, and further interesting plots.
BSG Updated for the 21st Century
The realism of the show is cemented by the amazing 21st century graphics that are much updated from the original 80’s series- which was slower and much more antiquated. The space battle cut scenes give realism, and create tension, excitement, and adventure. Inside the ships is where the drama and storyline unfolds; outside in deep space is where the action is. With this combination of elements it keeps the show moving along.
I recommend you watch this mini-series introduction because it is the back-story for the entire series.
With the great cast of actors, and a fun sexier adaptation of the original storyline along with the 21st century graphics, Battle Star Galactica The Mini-Series is a stellar space drama. The show can be streamed on Amazon Video.
