Lets face it, professional wrestling is aimed primarily at men. Some women do get into the show, but it lacks a lot of what appeals to what we find entertaining. A new reality show has been created to appeal to those of us who want to see a behind the scenes view of the glamorous aspect of being a female wrestler. This show features a few female entertainers from the WWE, and it is called Total Divas. The ladies on the show are the Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, Natalya, Trinity, Ariane, Eva Marie, and JoJo. Each girl displays their vastly different real personalities, including romantic relationships and real life tensions.
The twins, Nikki and Brie, have very separate identities that are not as evident in the time you see them in the ring. Brie is engaged to the bearded, underdog wrestler Daniel Bryan, whose real name is Bryan Danielson. They are a low-key couple, and she is the tame sister who comes off a lot more grounded. Nikki is dating the very famous wrestler John Cena. They are shown enjoying expensive cars, big lavish homes, and focus on their shallow outward appearance.
Natalya, referred to by friends as Nattie, is a very sweet girl who lets people walk all over her. We do not see her personality come out in the ring at all, so this is one of the most unexpected personalities for the viewers. She comes from such a well-known family and has grown up in the entertainment industry, but it has not changed the person that she is. On the show we see her home life with Tyson Kidd. They have been together for so long that the romance has died, but you can still see that a lot of love is between them. Nattie is arguably the most relatable girl on the show.
Trinity and Ariane and in a tag team called the Funkadactyls. Their stage names are Cameron and Naomi, which we rarely hear on the show because they are almost entirely shown behind the scenes. Trinity is revealed to be engaged to wrestler Jimmy Uso. Ariane’s boyfriend is not in the entertainment industry so he is not shown as much.
Eva Marie and JoJo are the newcomers to the business, who are being introduced on Total Divas more than on any of the WWE shows. They are still training and trying to find their place in the business. JoJo is the youngest at 19 years old, and seems like a fish out of water who lacks the confidence you expect from a diva. Eva Marie has fiery red hair and is making waves in the industry, whether she is making a good name for herself or not. She has been portrayed to be defiant to her bosses and also a liar. Perhaps her rocky start will turn around for the better in the long run.
As a woman, I enjoy the show. It may be partially scripted at times, when its obvious they want to cause some conflicts for ratings. However, they do show the girls tackling real issues such as body image and relationship problems that we all go through. These women take on so much responsibility as role models, and they do convey a really powerful message about being happy with yourself. Sports entertainment is changing its demographic with this show and it was a very smart move to make.
