Psych, the USA Network program, has always been one of my favorite television shows. The characters are quirky enough to love and the stories have always been engaging. Some of the endings I could figure out and some surprised me in the end. It has a nice mix of that. Also, being from the North, I appreciate the camera views of Santa Barbara, especially during the cold, grey winters we experience in the Snow Belt.
Recently, though, I started watching Season 6 on Netflix. The show seemed different. The look seemed different. The feel seemed different. And it was….It is great!! The characters have really come into their own and are even more engaging then before. It feels like a family. You know what I mean, some family members do not necessarily get along and fight a bit, but they would defend each other from outsiders at the first sign of a threat. Other characters get along with everyone and are considered the glue that keeps everyone together. That is how this season feels to me, like a large, loving, albeit somewhat dysfunctional family.
I noticed more slo-mo shots. It has been said before, but I have to agree that almost everything looks great viewed in slow motion. There is more background activity which gives the look a little more dimension. I am not a technical person and cannot explain all the nuances of camera angles, different lenses, etc. But I know how it makes me feel. The show now feels more like a movie, then a weekly television program. The colors seem richer and the added activity makes it seem more realistic, more alive.
The writing, especially the comedic parts, has been kicked up also. I have experienced several times when my feet started kicked involuntarily because I was laughing so hard. Not to mention, the multiple times I have had to go back and re-watch a scene because I either laughed over what they said or I just had to hear it again. As an extremely experienced television viewer (it is one of the few things I am truly good at), I have to say that is like having the best chocolate on chocolate dessert after a really great meal. It is extra and it sure is good!!
Again, I have loved the show from the beginning. Maybe that is why I appreciate the “upgrades” to the show. Many times, by Season 6, story lines and characters seem tired. That is not to say that a program cannot still be good, but a continuing story can lose some of its freshness. Stories can start to repeat slightly. It has happened before, but not this time. I am enjoying this season so very much, I have to control how many episodes I watch at a time. I want to devour it all at once, binge on episode after episode, but I am going to harness my rarely-used self-control and only watch two episodes at a time. I want to savor this great season and enjoy all the great moments. If you are a Psych fan and have not seen Season 6 yet, may I suggest you take the time to watch it? I highly doubt you will be disappointed. As always, that is just my opinion. Enjoy!!
