“Riddick” is a 2013 action/sci-fi/thriller rated R and directed by David Twohy. The alternate title is known as “Riddick: Rule the Dark” It was produced by One Race Productions, Radar Pictures, and Riddick Canada Productions. This movie’s main actors are Vin Diesel, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable, Kattee Sackhoff, and Dave Batista. The movie’s tag line is ‘Survival Is His Revenge’.
Riddick is once again left for dead on a strange planet, this time, inhabited by an alien predator. Not knowing whether he will survive or not after being colonized (the previous movie within the series) Riddick sends out a signal for help only to get bounty hunters and much more vying for him. Going back to the roots of the past movies, Riddick is brutal and vicious in his attacking of others. He makes a few “friends” and even more enemies. Without giving everything away because you really should go see this one for yourself, I have to say that there was one thing that stuck with me even after watching this movie. The dog was one of the coolest parts of this movie. How Riddick was able to “tame” it and find something in a similar situation as himself was deep on a level not previously seen within this series. Pay attention when Riddick asks them to check the window too, a storm is coming!
I think it is important to point out the R rating on this movie. This is definitely not for your children. This movie contains nudity (full female), horrible language (f-bombs outta this world), and lots of bloody deaths, etc. While the rating is important, the story and plot content make it somewhat necessary to have these, what some would say, crude features in a film.
Although, this film mentions characters from past movies within the series, it could be watched stand alone. I guarantee anyone watching just this one without having seen previous installments will be watching those as soon as possible too. Moreover, Vin Diesel as Riddick is one of the craziest, coolest things I think I have ever seen. His eyes are always the one thing that gets me. They pull you in and make you want him to survive. You watch him and feel like you can do anything, be anyone, even with a crazy life like his.
Overall, I give “Riddick” a 4.5/ 5 for the experience one gets when watching it. I think the low budget and lengthier shooting schedule made the movie less appealing to some, but in my book “Riddick” is a must see for 2013.
