It is always a good time when I get to chat with Sammy Kershaw. There is never a dull moment when it comes to Sammy. He is either busy writing, touring, recording, handcrafting furniture or setting his newly renovated kitchen on fire with his Sammy Kershaw Cajun spices and always has some new story to share.
This conversation was about the release of he and Aaron Tippin and Joe Diffe’s new CD release, “All in the Same Boat.”
This time I caught him while he was on his way to the Truck dealership to get the air-conditioning on his truck fixed, I kid you not. He pulled over on the side of the road under a shade tree so he could talk to me with the windows rolled down in the 90 degree temperature in Louisiana this time of year. I got right to the point as I didn’t want Sammy to get heat stroke on account of me. This is how it went”
Q Is it windy where you are?
A Yes but I just rolled up the windows in my truck so I could hear you and it’s really gotten hot in here.
Q Oh no, roll those windows down. You’ll be able to hear me.
A I don’t know my dear.
Q I’ll make this really fast so you don’t have a heat stroke.
A All right.
Q Okay so the three of you, yourself, Joe Diffe and Aaron Tippin have released an album?
A Yeah, it just came out on the 28th of May. It is doing good.
Q Okay, well I saw the video for All in the Same boat and it was a really cute video.
A Oh thank you. We had fun doing it but I got to tell you it rained on us all day and all night and of course it got cold. There was a cold front coming through and when we booked everything a few days before we were looking at the weather and the weather was supposed to be pretty nice that day. We woke up that morning to rain. We started shooting at noon and we shot until midnight thirty. That was the last shot and it rained and got cold but every time we had to shoot a scene it would stop raining. The last shot that you see in the video it was pouring down rain and it was freezing cold and like I said it was 12:30 at night and it was the last shot for the video and I tell you what, it was miserable riding in that boat being pulled by that truck you know?
Q So I noticed there are 12 songs on the CD, did you each put four on?
A We each picked three songs and then Joe, Aaron and I did three together.
Q Oh, that’s perfect. Did you roll your window down?
A Actually I pulled under a big tree on the side of the road.
Q Good. I don’t want you getting sick. That would be terrible. Is it about ninety there? You back in Louisiana?
A Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I am in Louisiana.
Q Right, so it’s about ninety there?
A That’s about what it’s been running the last few weeks so actually it’s not too bad, to me anyway. I think the summer is running a little late for us is the simplest way to put it.
Q Let me ask you when you are out there and it is 100 degrees and 110 degrees do you wear shorts?
A You know I just started to last year.
Q It is so hot under those stage lights.
A That is exactly right.
Q You are baking like rotisserie chickens.
A That’s exactly right. You know it is not so bad when you love what you do so much like I do. I really love what I do.
Q Okay and I am going to ask you one final question and I think you told me you have 12 songs, you each did 3 plus you did 3 together. Do you have any juicy little stories about the production of this CD? Did you record in Louisiana?
A Yeah, some of it was cut in Louisiana.
Q I saw you did a tribute to George Jones right after he passed away. I have to tell you man that we have talked a lot and I know that it is a fact that he is one of your idols.
A Oh yeah he was THE IDOL.
Q I know he was your main one so when he passed I really thought of you. I actually sent you a little note but probably 5000 other people did too so you probably didn’t see it but I told you I was sorry for your loss because I know that you felt it. I did watch the video. You cut that in your house right?
A I sure did.
Q And that song is # 7 on the CD?
A It sure is.
Q I want to talk to you about how that song came about and really dedicate a separate interview to that. Trying to stay on point, this interview is about this really cool release from you three guys, “All in the Same Boat.” I am going to name your Tracks and attach a link to the great music video. I want to let you go so you don’t overheat but Sammy it is always great chatting with you.
A You too my dear.
