Fighters Megamix combined the fighters of Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers in one nice package. The game, however, went far beyond that as the fighting engine was tweaked ever so subtly to allow the different fighting styles of each game to work together in harmony. Additionally, Sega also brought in a plethora of unlockable characters from the Virtua world.
AM2 Palm Tree
The AM2 Palm Tree is among the more bizarre characters in Fighters Megamix as it is actually a fighter styled after the AM2 programming team’s logo. To play as the AM2 Palm Tree, you have to log 84 hours of game time. Once you have played Fighters Megamix for 84 hours, highlight Kumachan and select using the ‘Z’ button.
Fighters Megamix includes characters from Sonic the Fighters, sometimes called Sonic Championship, including Bark. Bark is unlocked after you defeat the Muscle Trial (Course E). Bark’s fighting stage is the same polar-themed stage the character used in Sonic the Fighters.
Bean is another unlockable Fighters Megamix character that was drawn from the cast of Sonic the Fighters. Bean is also unlocked by completing the Muscle Trial (Course E). This secret fighter’s corresponding fighting arena is Knuckles’ stage from Sonic the Fighters.
Deku is essentially a Mexican bean fighter exclusive to the world of Fighters Megamix. Deku can be unlocked by finishing the Dirty Fighters Trial (Course G). This secret character’s moves are very similar to those of Sanman from Fighting Vipers and his featured stage is the ring from the Fighters Megamix training mode.
Hornet is the iconic stock car from the legendary Sega arcade racing game, Daytona USA. Beating the Secrets Trial (Course I) unlocks Hornet in Fighters Megamix. Hornet’s stage in Fighters Megamix is based around the beginner race track from Daytona USA. Fighting race cars for the win!
Sega gave its devoted fans something special when it included Janet Marshall from Virtua Cop 2 as a secret selectable combatant in Fighters Megamix. Janet becomes a selectable fighter after completing the Girls Trial (Course D). Janet’s move set is drawn from Virtua Fighter 3’s Aoi, but Janet packs a bonus lethal punch as she has the ability to fire her Virtua gun during her fights in Fighters Megamix. The Virtua City fighting stage is heavily influenced by the first stage of Virtua Cop, showing Sega’s commitment to including the entire Virtua world in this all-star compilation and swan song to the Sega Saturn console.
Kids Akira, drawn from Virtua Fighter Kids, even makes an appearance in Fighters Megamix. Unlock the pint-sized Akira by defeating the Virtua Fighter Trial (Course B). Kids Akira retains the same cartoony stage he had in Virtua Fighter Kids.
Kids Sarah is also unlocked by completing the Virtua Fighter Trial (Course B). Her fighting stage in Fighters Megamix is actually full-sized Sarah’s stage from the original Virtua Fighter, albeit enclosed with neon ‘MEGAMIX’ lettering.
Mr. Meat is the most bizarre character you will find in Fighters Megamix, which is truly saying something. To unlock the character, you must start Fighters Megamix at least 30 times. Once you have done this, Mr. Meat is a playable by highlighting the Kumachan icon on the fighter select screen, selecting it by pressing the ‘X’ button, and fighting on the Secrets Trial (Course I).
Pandachan is simply a panda variant of the standard Kumachan character. To play as Pandachan, select Kumachan by using the ‘C’ button.
Rent-A-Hero is drawn from the Sega Mega Drive game of the same name. The character is unlocked by defeating the Smart Guys Trial (Course F). Rent-A-Hero’s arena is Virtua Fighter 2’s “Chicago” level, the one that is used for matches between Jacky Bryant and Sarah Bryant.
School Girl Honey/Candy
Beat the Novice Trial (Course A) to unlock School Girl Honey/Candy. In order to select Honey/Candy in her school girl uniform, highlight her icon on the fighter selection screen and select her by pressing either the ‘X’ or ‘Z’ buttons. The ‘X’ button selects Honey/Candy in her red school girl uniform, while the ‘Z’ button lets you play as Honey/Candy in her blue school girl uniform.
Siba was originally set to be a character in the original Virtua Fighter arcade game, but he was eliminated from the 3D fighting game before its release. Siba’s moves are similar to Bahn’s, but with the ability to engage in combat using his sword. Siba can be unlocked by defeating the Bosses Trial (Course H). Siba’s arena is inspired by Wolf’s desert stage from Virtua Fighter 3. Select Siba using the ‘X’ button in order to play as an un-texture mapped version of the character as he would have appeared in the original Virtua Fighter, as opposed to the standard texture mapped model that fits with the overall graphical display of Fighters Megamix.
URA Bahn is a strengthened version of the standard Bahn character from Fighting Vipers; his strikes inflict significant amounts of damage, making him a true strength-oriented fighter. Unlock URA Bahn by completing the Viper Trial (Course C). URA Bahn’s fighting stage is set on the outskirts of the arena used by the standard Bahn character.
