Junction City, KS
The small town of Junction City, in Geary County, has a population of roughly 25,000 people. This town is near a large military base, Fort Riley. As many people know, military bases bring people in and out of the town. This can be a good thing for the city, but it can also have many negative effects.
Lately it seems like there has been a lot of crime been going on for such a small city. What would be the easiest way for people to be informed about what is going on in there home town? Social media seems correct to me.
A group of people in Junction City have created a Facebook page known as, “The JC Way.” This page has been sufficient in letting the public know about current events, upcoming events, crime, and arrests that have happened throughout the week.
I believe that a large amount of people are receiving information and news about where they are living through a Facebook page, rather than through the news channel on television. This has began to be a big trend from what I have seen so far.
Whenever I wanted to know information about what is going on in and around town, I would turn the TV to a local channel and almost instantly get the information I was seeking. Now, with Facebook being such a popular social media source, all I have to do is type in JC Way in the search engine and information about almost everything going on in town comes up.
Every Town Should Use Social Media
What I am simply trying to say is, every town should use social media as a way of informing the public. Are there any reasons to this? Yes.
First off, almost everyone that you can think of owns a smart phone with internet capability. This allows for the application Facebook to be downloaded. I am not going to explain how to use Facebook, but all you have to do is “like” the page that you are wishing to view, and all of the information would show up.
Second off, TV on phones is much more time consuming to use rather than going to Facebook. The news could be shown on your phone and you could use the classic way, but why would you when you could be on a social networking site and read about the information that is only about your city?
Facebook is not the only form of social networking, but to me, this seems like it would be the easiest to use in order to display information about a city.
I have briefly talked about The JC Way in this article and wanted to point out that it is not run by the city, but rather a group of people. If city councils were to take this into account, they could have a person designated to updating this Facebook page, and therefore it would be much more professional.
