Taylor Swift is headed back to the recording studio to pour her heart out about really happened between her and her ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles.
For her upcoming fifth album, Taylor plans to set the record straight about some of the factors that contributed to their breakup in January. As she explained, “when I’m writing songs, it’s the only opportunity for my fans to hear what really happened. I’m in control of the stories of my life!”
The songwriting process will also involve an intense period of personal reflection. As she commented, “I scour my brain for every possible metaphor and analogy I can use to describe my life and emotions.”
From an artistic standpoint, I could understand the appeal of writing a breakup song about Harry. Part of T-Swizzle’s appeal comes from her self-awareness and her willingness to share such a personal part of herself through her music.
As Taylor’s BFF, Selena Gomez, commented, “she’s got that vibe to her that you want to be her best friend…She writes what’s you’re feeling, and it’s like, wait a minute, I felt that…She’s been through a lot, and she’s not afraid to be strong about it and share what she’s gone through because that’s a confident woman.”
From a fan’s perspective, it’s so nice to be able to listen to her songs and to know that she’s been there, and that she can relate.
Still, I’m wondering if, for Taylor’s sake, she’s better off letting this one go, and not writing that song about Harry.
From a public image standpoint, the “22” singer confided that she is tired of being labeled as a “serial dater.” She suggested critics were threatened by the fact that she was a successful young woman in the entertainment industry, and that they needed to find chinks in her armor.
While it’s possible that critics do unfairly scrutinize her personal life, Taylor may not be doing herself any favors by continuing to trash her ex-boyfriends in song. When she airs her relationship dirty laundry in song, it just gives these haters more ammunition.
And from a personal standpoint, it may not be in her best interests to dwell on a relationship that ended ten months ago. All that mental energy she’s wasting on Harry could be better spent enjoying her single life, and keeping herself open for the right new guy to come along.
Should Taylor write that song about Harry? Or is she better off letting this one go?
