Has an NFL player with next to nothing in terms of records or accomplishments ever been so beloved by the media? Tim Tebow could perhaps go down in history as one of the biggest flops ever. Sure he won’t be in the same league as Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell, but that doesn’t make it anymore unfortunate.
It’s quite obvious how much Tebow loves this game. He has the mindset and determination to go as far as he can. Unfortunately, that mindset appears to be fixated on playing quarterback for any NFL team that will have him.
It’s not hard to realize Tebow’s abilities as a passer are – limited. His preseason games with the New England Patriots are painful to watch. To be fair, his final preseason game was the best of the bunch. However, his release from the New England Patriots on August 31st, 2013 proved one good game isn’t good enough. To be fair, did anyone ever truly believe he would play quarterback for the Patriots? Even if something happened to Tom Brady, it wouldn’t be Tebow lining up behind center.
With that release, Tebow has found himself either traded or fired by three different franchises since the beginning of 2012.
It was reported by Peter King of SI that an unknown NFL team had offered Tebow the chance to switch positions in hopes of reigniting his floundering career and the passer politely declined the opportunity due to his desire to play QB for another team. Seriously?
Delusional or determined?
As made clear by some of the more horrific accidents, careers in the NFL can be taken away in the blink of an eye. Why would Tim Tebow pass up this second chance? Could it be that he thinks there will be a team down the line interested in his throwing services? Perhaps he wants to go out on his own terms. Money has never seemed to be a deciding factor to him.
His love of the game may be his downfall.
There’s no debate about Tebow’s running abilities. The kid can flat out sprint across the field like there’s no tomorrow. Surely this unknown team was interesting in that ability. It was known Belichick was having Tebow catch passes during training camp. Jarrett Bell from USA Today began speculation that this would lead for a change of positions back in July. If Belichick who is notorious for teaching players multiple positions couldn’t reason with Tebow enough to keep him on the roster as a multi-purpose player, then this the once great college quarterback could be destined to fade away as a result of his pride.
Pride can be both your best and worst friend. Sometimes the logical thing to do is not what your heart wants, but what your head tells you. Sadly, none of us will ever know what he’s thinking. Nevertheless, it’s a slap in the face to all the ordinary people who will never be able to put on the pads as they watch a talented kid pass up his second opportunity in a lifetime because his pride and stubbornness got in the way.
There’s always a chance he could end up surprising us all one day and win MVP as the quarterback of an NFL team. Crazier things have happened. Right?
