Being away from home really makes you cherish those people that have been there for you through the thick and thin moments in life, even if they didn’t want to be. This Sunday, August 4th, is National Sister’s Day, so take a second from enjoying that last bit of summer sun and remember some of the times you appreciated having her around the most. These are some of the reasons I am blessed I have Kyle in my life:
I’m sorry I bit you, pulled your hair, and punched you.
I must say, I have no idea how my sister lived with me when we were growing up. I was an imp! To this day, if you ask her, Kyle will gladly show you the battle scars that I left on her. From the perfect half-moon shaped bite-mark on her thigh to the mark on her brow from where I hit her with a gulf club by accident. Needless to say, I cannot believe how much our relationship has changed since we have grown into respectable, restrained, adults.
I need some ear plugs.
I think Kyle and my relationship really started to change when Kyle got a new car. However, there was one tradeoff to getting a new car per my father’s rules. New car means having to drive the little sister to school. This is how Kyle and I found something we have in common; we both have the voice of a cat being dunked in a tub of water, and we both have a love of anything under the title “oldies but goodies, legendary hits”. Although these days I am finding our musical likes to span from our traditional oldies, to Pitbull, to anything from Pitch Perfect, our singing voices still are awful.
Beep, Squirt, Panic!
My sister is a fourth year going for a Psychologist Degree and she is not afraid to use what she learned on you or me for that matter. For one of her projects she decided to use me as her test specimen and squirt me with water every time her phone beeped. She claimed it was “classic conditioning”; I claimed it was cruel and unusual punishment!
Boys… They always start problems.
Kyle has never liked it when I interfered with her choice of boyfriends. But I really hated this one guy she was dating. I hated him so much I may or may not have pretended he hit me, to get him kicked out of the house. I would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for the fact that my sister was crying so hard from laughter. Needless to say, they didn’t last. But at least we can laugh about it now.
When things go bump in the night.
Kyle is 21, and still deathly afraid of the dark. To this day she will still have me check, under and behind her bed, in her closet, in her shower, and behind her door of her room after long trips. I really don’t mind, but it just makes me laugh when I pass her room and see my brother’s old hockey stick leaning against the wall for protective matters.
I know that even my sister, Kyle, and I have rough patches but at the end of the day she was my first best girlfriend and I love her. So this weekend grab your sister(s) or best girlfriends if you were blessed with brothers, and show them how much you appreciate them!
