Skylanders: Swap Force features a unique take on ‘DLC.’ Rather than simply downloading new characters and levels, gamers can purchase them in toy form and utilize them through the use of a battery-operated or USB-powered Portal accessory. You can pick up a Skylander for between $8-$10 and the starter packs are bundled with three already. The Adventure Packs will cost you about $20 and contain an exclusive Skylander, additional level, and a couple of item figures.
Skylanders is a massively popular series that is determined to sit alongside Pokemon and… Well, to be realistic, Pokemon is pretty much the lone ruler of its ‘Gotta Catch’em All’ kingdom. Digimon, Monster Rancher, and numerous other pretenders have all fallen by the wayside, but Skylanders is an excellent alternative. If you find yourself unsure of who to invest in, look no further. This time we’ll be taking a look at a Magic Skylander. Does Pop Fizz deserve to be counted amongst the most iconic of the series?
As one of the very first second generation Skylanders gamers were introduced to, Pop Fizz has some lofty expectations to meet. This furry alchemist appears frequently in Skylanders promos with his signature soda and zany sense of humor. It’s no small matter that ‘Punch Pop Fizz’ got to succeed Dark Spyro as the 3DS exclusive variant. Does Pop Fizz deserve all this attention and promotion? Yes. Yes he does.
Pop Fizz is that rare Skylander combination of equal parts likability and capability. The potential presented by his potions for chaos is unmatched. You can lay down pools of green acid, summon bouncing purple allies, or just blow everything apart. With a few upgrades you’ll be cycling through Pop Fizz’s potion selection like a master.
Aside from having a chemical arsenal, Pop Fizz himself can transform into a wild beast capable of slaughtering enemies with his claws. This “Jekyll and Hyde” dynamic makes for a fascinating addition to the Skylanders gameplay. He might not carry the most devastating of movesets, but Pop Fizz is extremely unique in a sea of RPG clichés like fire-breathing dragons, cursed warriors, elf rogues, and glass cannon mages.
The design of Pop Fizz is inherently likeable. There’s something about his toothy grin, excited gaze, and bubbly soda that add up to a very charismatic champion. The Pop Fizz figure easily sits alongside greats like Hot Dog, Fright Rider, and Ninjini as the best of the Skylanders Giants line newcomers. If you also want to get your hands on Series 2 Trigger Happy and Whirlwind, you can get the three together in this special pack.
Whether you’re new to Skylands or a returning veteran, Pop Fizz is a must-have champion. His figure is excellently designed and he mixes up gameplay with his potions and beast mode. If you decide you want to invest in the gremlin alchemist, you’ll find he works best with technical Skylanders like Sprocket, Prism Break, or Whirlwind. When you’re outfitting him with a hat, I’d recommend either the Pumpkin Hat or Fast Food Hat. Both of Pop Fizz’s final upgrade paths are excellent- though Best of the Beast is more practical.
