Many soap fans are dismayed over the news that the Internet soap opera dramas “All My Children” and “One Life To Live” which airs on Hulu, Hulu Plus, and iTunes are going on hiatus. This hiatus is due to the fact that their production company, Prospect Park, is in the middle of a grievance dispute with the labor union, I.A.T.S.E. The union is claiming that the production went over budget when filming several episodes of “All My Children.” The agreement was that the production costs would stay under $125,000 per episode. In return, the union agreed that its members would take pay cuts. If it is proven that that the company did go over-budget, Prospect Park would then owe back pay to the workers, as well as additional expenses.
Prospect Park originally planned on going on hiatus on June 17th and decided to take that hiatus a week early due to the dispute. However, what some soap fans may not realize is that the company has already produced 40 or more unaired episodes of the shows. This is enough shows to last through the summer, through the month of August. This means that those who have been enjoying these shows should not change their viewing habits. In fact, soap fans should be supporting these shows even more.
Why, should the fans be supporting the shows and the company more? It is simple. The viewers are keeping the shows alive. We are making money for Prospect Park. We are doing this by purchasing Hulu Plus, purchasing episodes through iTunes, and by viewing the ads on Hulu. This money may be needed if Prospect Park has to pay the Labor Union any back pay or any other expenses. While we are helping them earn money, we are helping to keep the shows we love alive.
What will Prospect Park be doing while we continue watching the shows we love? They will be trying to make another deal with the union. Hopefully, everything will be worked out by August 12. If the union and Prospect Park can come to an understanding by then, the shows will begin production and there will be no interruption in the postings of the shows.
Is Prospect Park at blamed? Did they go over budget? This writer has no idea? Only the accountants know this or will soon know this fact. All this writer knows, is that many people have worked hard to keep these shows alive. This includes the fans, the writers, the actors, the crew members, and everyone else involved behind the scenes. For this reason, she doesn’t want all this hard to work to end with Season One. She wants to see these shows to live on for years. She also understands that this is a new venture. Prospect Park is taking on a new challenge. For all of these reasons, she will stand behind the shows, she will continue to watch them, she will continue to tell everyone she knows about them and ask them to watch, and she hopes you will do the same.
