When I was a young boy, the Detroit Pistons had the nickname “Bad Boys.” That was when Dennis Rodman was on the team, and the Pistons were the hottest team in the NBA, winning three straight championships. But like all good things, the dynasty came to an end, and Dennis Rodman’s public persona went from basketball hero, to bizarre. For the most part, Rodman’s outrageous appearance and strange behavior fueled his persona as bad-boy entertainer. When he retired from the NBA, his fame went into decline, but now he walks the fine line between fame and infamy. What will be the legacy of Dennis Rodman? Will he become another celebrity that cleans up their act and starts preaching sobriety to others? Will he find religion? Will he become a Jehovah’s Witness? Or will he go too far?
Dennis Rodman has basically become an American clown, and thus his latest deliberate attempt to outrage the public is not being taken very seriously. That may soon change however if armed conflict breaks out on the Korean Peninsula, and North Korea continues to threaten the destruction of a major American city. The stability of Kim Jong Un has been questioned, and reports have suggested that there was a recent assassination attempt on the young dictator. Despite all this, Rodman is still talking about Kim Jong Un as if he is his new best friend on the school bus, and apparently Rodman is planning on going back to visit his self-deified friend very soon, where they will vacation together in the impoverished and severely oppressed North Korean countryside.
But let’s get down to earth. Obviously this is a stunt by Dennis Rodman to get attention again. The reports that are coming out about him suggest that he is losing his battle with alcoholism, and it would appear that his mental health is in decline. There is nothing funny or entertaining about that. Where this gets truly frightening though is on the other side of the Pacific, where a 28 year old dictator that has a very formidable military is working tirelessly to grab more power and riches. Why is Kim Jong Un welcoming Dennis Rodman into North Korea? Why is this socialist tyrant entertaining a capitalist pig alcoholic American stage show such as Dennis Rodman? Surely the youthful power monger doesn’t believe that Rodman is of any value to improving the diplomatic situation between North Korea and the west. Rodman is being used for some purpose, but what?
If Dennis Rodman returns to North Korea in August, I fear that may be that last we ever hear from him. No sane American is going to North Korea, so Dennis Rodman will have to suffice, but Kim Jong Un might just feel that someone of American Citizenship must die, and it may be our favorite drunk basketball player. I would hate to see this, as I think Mr. Rodman’s last emotions would be confusion and sadness. I don’t believe he means to harm his country, I just think he is an attention junkie and an alcoholic. But just like any person with a serious addition, his actions will very likely get him killed. North Korea has already publicly announced that a state of war exists between the United States and North Korea. What better way to intimidate and provoke America further than to kill one of our celebrities? So why did the North Koreans let Rodman come back home after the first visit? Likely because they knew he would hit the airways and that it would bring publicity to North Korea, not to mention that it is a lot more shocking if you kill the guy the second time he comes to visit you.
I certainly hope that Dennis Rodman will be sharing this story in the AA rooms, where it will certainly be one of the more outrageous drunk tales. I fear for Mr. Rodman however that he will be remembered for being the guy that got killed by Kim Jong Un, before things got out of hand between North Korea and the rest of the world. I also believe that Kim Jong Un has a slim chance of making it to 30, and if he does, I doubt he makes it to 32. Before his demise however, I am quite confident that Kim Jong Un will demonstrate to the world just how ruthless he can truly be.
