Now that they’ve won the regular- season conference championship, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are preparing for the Southland Conference Tournament to be held March 13-16 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
Third SLC Championship for the Lumberjacks
SFA clinched the regular- season championship and the top seed in the tournament with a 58-49 win over Texas A&M- Corpus Christi Saturday night at William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas. The win raises the ‘Jacks record to 26-3 overall and 16-2 in conference play. The 26-wins equal the school record SFA set in the 2007-2008 season. This is the third regular-season championship earned by the ‘Jacks under Head Coach Danny Kaspar. Now in his thirteenth year, Kasper’s overall record at SFA going into the SLC tourney is 246-139. In addition to the three regular-season conference championships, Kasper has also led SFA to their only NCAA Tournament appearance, as well as a spot in the NIT post-season tournament.
SFA’s first game will in conference semi-finals on Friday, March 15
SFA and conference runner-up Northwestern State will both have double-byes in the eight-team SLC tourney and won’t play until the semi-finals on March 15. SFA’s game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT tip-off; Northwestern will follow at 7:30 p.m. Both semi-final games will be streamed on ESPN3. The championship game will start at 7:30 p.m. on March 16 and will be televised on ESPN2. Oral Roberts University, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls State, Sam Houston State University, Central Arkansas, and McNeese State are the other participants in the eight-team tournament. The winner of the conference tournament will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. If SFA fails to win the SLC tourney, and doesn’t receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney they are guaranteed a berth in the NIT tourney by virtue of winning their conferences’ regular-season title.
