Spongebob Squarepants is a popular children’s show created by Stephen Hillenburg, released in 1999. Since its release, the show has been going strong; however avid fans such as me have noticed a strong deterioration in the show’s overall quality; it turned from a great show with morals and logical jokes and dilemmas to a idiotic show full of randomness and bland humor. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy the show for its nostalgic effect, I just think it should end now before it drops off everyone’s map.
Spongebob is by far a different show than it used to be when it was released, and the years to come soon after. However, when the show was updated with better animation, sound, etc., the show’s content went downhill. In previous Spongebob episodes, there had been funny jokes, and some decent morals to each episode, but then it hit the fan. Stupid jokes and random nothingness became what was called “funny” in the show.
The number of viewers like me dropped, but the number of actual children watching the show skyrocketed. Spongebob merchandise started flowing off shelves and with this new demand, the people working on Spongebob had to supply. Their minds, empty of any new original content, reverted to randomness and bland humor. I think this show should end now, because I don’t want to see Patrick say something stupid and make kids giggle, I want to see a show that has both hidden, more adult jokes and mature humor. The people at Nickelodeon are “digging their own graves” by continuing to make this show. Eventually, the majority of the fan base will look up and realize that this stuff isn’t funny anymore, nor entertaining. Then, this majority will drop off, leaving Spongebob and the creators struggling, which is NOT what I want to happen. I want to see this show go out with a bang, not go out by failure.
A television show with such popularity is always in a bad position. When your peak success is soon after the program is launched, such as Spongebob, people always struggle to come up with content that can match to the show’s former glory. Without doing this, the fan base from the show’s peaking point drop off, while new viewers never get to experience what the show was really like. A popular example of this would be The Simpson’s.
In the end, I really do believe that current-day Spongebob has the potential to be a really great show, and it isn’t the creators faults for lack if new content, after 14 years of running on air, any show loses its hook, at least a little bit. I think Nickelodeon and their sponsors should drop Spongebob before it “goes out of business” if you will, or ends up failing. Make a finale episode, make a surprise ending, make it so good that no one will ever forget it, but please, end the show and end it soon.
